Wright Posts Eight Points as Knights Roll Past Converse
LAURINBURG, N.C.-Senior attack Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) provided St. Andrews Presbyterian College with eight points including her 100th career goal in a 22-2 women's lacrosse victory over Converse College on a wet Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Knights won their second straight game and tied the school record for wins in a season improving to 7-4 overall. The Valkyries dip to1-8 in their inaugural season.
Wright had game-highs of four goals and four assists to lead St. Andrews to the 20-goal victory. Wright's eight points is a season-high for any Lady Knight this season.
Freshman Cara Manas (Harwood, Md.) scored the first goal of the game with exactly 28 minutes left in the first half as the Knights posted their second straight coast-to-coast victory. St. Andrews scored the first eight goals and led 15-1 at halftime. Manas scored four goals for the second straight contest and added two assists to tie her season-high point total of six.
Junior Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) had a hat trick and three assists for six points. Brown is averaging 5.6 points per game.
Converse junior Samerria Crowder (Newport News, Va.) broke up the shutout bid midway through the first half. Freshman Lisa Ryan (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) scored the Valkyries other goal early in the second half on an assist by classmate Ashley Day (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Crowder had team-highs of three draw controls and two ground balls.
The Knights dominated the box score with a 37-5 shot advantage and 21-9 ground ball edge. SAPC won 18-of-25 draw controls and committed 10 less turnovers, 21-11. St. Andrews cleared the ball perfectly for the second straight game (10-for-10) while Converse was only 7-of-18 on clearing attempts.
A trio of Lady Knights scored two goals including sophomore Alexis Goldman (Winter Springs, Fla.), freshman Nina Capuano (Lusby, Md.), and freshman Anna Egeln (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.).
Freshman Shana Schroeder (Newark, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal while the Knights also got goals off the sticks of senior Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.), sophomore Allie Faulhaber (Apex, N.C.), sophomore Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.), and freshman Chelsea Ross (Newark, N.Y.).
Binggeli added two assists for a three-point day as she surpassed the 200 career points plateau.
Senior Courtney Ross (Newark, N.Y.) chipped in with one helper. Courtney Ross and McDaniel both had four draw controls while Chelsea Ross and Brown each had three ground balls. Senior Katie Rhodes (Auburn, N.Y.) had two of the Knights nine caused turnovers.
Senior starting goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) and freshman backup Meghan Powell (Annapolis, Md.) split time in net for St. Andrews. McCaffrey made one save and allowed one goal in the first half to earn her seventh victory of the season and 24th win of her career. Powell also had one save and allowed one goal in her 28 minutes and 34 seconds of action before the game was shortened due to lightning.
Sophomore netminder Ashley Mercuri (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) played the whole game for Converse. Mercuri gave up 22 goals and make 10 stops.
St. Andrews hosts Conference Carolinas rival Lees-McRae College on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
