No. 19 Mary Washington Tops Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The trio of Katie Wallis, Allie Kimmelman and Catherine Kennedy combined to score 13 of Mary Washington's 17 goals as the No. 19-ranked Eagles took an early lead en route to a 17-8 victory over the Stevenson University women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at the Caves Atheltics Complex.

Mary Washington (8-4, 4-1 CAC) scored the game's first five goals, including two in the first 1:24, in winning its fifth game out of the last seven.

Kimmelman had four goals and three assists to lead the Eagles with seven points while Wallis added five goals and six points. Kennedy had four goals.

The trio combined to score nine of Mary Washington's first 12 goals as the team built a 12-2 lead with 17:49 remaining in the game. Brittany Butler had two of the other three goals with Julia Milner added the third.

Sophomore Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) and junior Brittany Hilton (Barnesville/Poolesville) each had a goal for Stevenson (4-5, 2-2 CAC). Hilton's goal was her first of the season and cut the Eagle advantage to six at halftime, 8-2.

Mary Washington scored the first four goals of the second half to increase its lead to 10 with 17:49 left.

Junior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) scored the first of her three goals just 22 seconds later as the Mustangs outscored the Eagles 6-5 over the final 17:29.

Zegowitz, Baker and freshman Kristin Gancarz (Crownsville/Old Mill) each finished with three points to lead Stevenson.

Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough) had eight saves in almost 51 minutes in goal while sophomore Devan Malone (Highland/River Hill) played the other eight-plus.

Danni Guigli made 12 saves for Mary Washington.

Stevenson travels to Wesley on Wednesday. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.

Sophomore Katie Wallis scored five goals and added an assist, and freshmen Allie Kimmelman and Catherine Kennedy combined for eight goals and three assists to lead the 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past Stevenson University, 17-8, on Saturday in Stevenson, Md. The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season, and 4-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles started strong, netting the first five goals of the game. Wallis got the Eagles on the board 50 seconds into the game on a Kimmelman assist. Kimmelman scored at 28:36 on an Ellen Bikowski assist, and then Brittany Butler pushed the lead to 3-0 at 27:31 on an unassisted score. Freshman Catherine Kennedy scored her 42nd goal of the year at 23:26, and Wallis scored again at 20:02 to propel the lead to 5-0.

After a Stevenson tally, the Eagles scored three more, with Kimmelman, senior Julia Milner, and Kennedy adding goals. UMW led at halftime, 8-2.

The Eagles scored the first four goals of the second half to advance the lead to 12-2, and kept the margin to at least eight the rest of the way.

In addition to Wallis' five goals and assist, Kimmelman had four goals and three assists, Kennedy added four goals, and Butler and Milner added two goals apiece.

The Eagles were edged in shots, 33-32, with freshman Danni Guigli picking up 12 saves. UMW won 17 of 27 draw controls in the contest.

Mary Washington will host #13 Catholic University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
