Crusaders Drop 14–8 Decision to Moravian
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Senior midfielder Greg Norris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Denis Morris) scored the first, fourth and final Crusaders goals of the game; however, the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team fell to visiting Moravian College, 14–8, in a Landmark Conference game at Sassafras Fields on March 28.
Trailing by one, Norris knotted the game before the Greyhounds went on a six-goal streak to take a commanding 7–1 lead at the end of the first period.
Merely 14 seconds into the second stint of play, junior attack Joshua Rivet (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) scored a man-up goal on an assist from freshman midfielder Matt Weiner (Bound Brook, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) to tip-off a five-goal second quarter comeback that put the Crusaders back within striking distance.
Freshman attack Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) was next to score for the Orange and Maroon on a Norris feed. Norris then put the game at 7–4 when he was unassisted on a goal with 9 minutes, 26 seconds of play remaining in the first half.
Susquehanna continued its scoring stretch when freshman attack Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) netted a goal on an assist from senior midfielder Brett Brown (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth), and junior midfielder Fred Morse (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) found the back of the goal to bring the game within one.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the home-field team would get. Moravian scored the final goal of the half with 25 seconds lingering on the clock to lead 8–6 at the break.
Ten minutes ticked off the clock in the third period before the score would budge. The Greyhounds scored three in a row, and Susquehanna answered with back-to-back goals, bringing the score to 11–8.
Brown netted the first on a pass from freshman midfielder Tim Daley (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) before Norris would conclude all scoring for the Crusaders on a feed from Brown.
The Greyhounds closed out the game with three goals to take home a 14–8 win.
Winning 15 of 23 faceoffs, sophomore midfielder Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus) scooped up a game-high 12 groundballs, while junior defender Eric Burkhard (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added six.
Senior Benjamin Larson (Dover, Del./Dover) earned the win in goal by making 10 saves throughout the game. Freshman Bill Davis (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) suffered the loss for the Crusaders, making one stop in 21:08 of play. Freshman Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) made six saves in 34:44 in goal and freshman Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) was not forced to make a save in the final four minutes of play.
Next Game for Susquehanna: Wednesday, April 1, vs. Richard Stockton, 4:00 p.m.
