Baltimore, MD (June 26, 2005) - The Baltimore Bayhawks returned to Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University after a road win against the Rochester Rattlers last Sunday looking for a repeat performance at home. Baltimore (A) Tom Marechek initiated the first goal of the game on an assist from (A) Mikey Powell. Rochester (M) Casey Powell, brother of Bayhawk Mikey Powell, tied up the game early in the first quarter on an unassisted score. Less than two minutes later in the quarter Baltimore (D) Danny Cocchi notched an unassisted goal off a fast break past Rattler G Tilman Johnson. The Bayhawks continued to add points on the board when (A) Gary Gait scored off an assist from (M) Josh Sims with 10:10 remaining in the quarter. Baltimore (M) Drew Pfarr attempted to put the Bayhawks up 4-1, but his goal was waved off due to A player in the crease. Baltimore (D) Sean Nadelen received the first flag of the game for slashing and Rochester began to find some scoring momentum as two players scored within a minute of each other. The first goal was from (M) Kevin Cassese on an assist from (M) AJ Shannon and the second goal came with 7:51 remaining when (M) Casey Powell slammed a shot past Baltimore G Trevor Tierney. There was a break in the scoring action as the players found themselves mixed in physical end-to-end action and close shots on goal. With 4:36 remaining, Bayhawks (A) Gary Gait tallied his second goal of the quarter off an assist from (M) Mark Frye. First quarter action concluded with the Bayhawks up one point, 4-3.
Baltimore (M) Mark Frye kicked off the start of the second quarter with a driving shot past Rochester G Tilman Johnson off an assist from (A) Tom Marechek. The Rattlers battled back with numerous shots but Baltimore G Trevor Tierney denied the Rattlers repeatedly. Baltimore (M) Jeff Sonke ran a groundball coast-to-coast for an unassisted goal with 7:22 remaining in the first half to put the Bayhawks up 6-3 over the Rattlers. With under six minutes remaining in the half, Bayhawks (M) David Curry slung a hard shot wide of Rochester G Tilman Johnson for an unassisted goal. Rattler (M) Tim Booth returned with a Rochester goal off an assist (M) Chris Schiller. Baltimore (A) Tom Marechek notched his second goal of the half with 2:59 remaining off of A fast break from (D) Brodie Merrill putting the Bayhawks up 8-4. Rochester attempted to play catch-up with the Bayhawks with less than three minutes remaining in the half. (A) Jason Doneger found the net for a goal off an assist from (M) Casey Powell and A John Grant found the goal on a no-look shot past Baltimore G Trevor Tierney putting the Rattlers within 2 points of the Bayhawks. Baltimore (M) Josh Sims countered with an unassisted goal to put the Bayhawks ahead 9-6 with 1:14 remaining in the half. The physical first half action ended with a double penalty on Bayhawks (D) Danny Cocchi for both holding and slashing. Midway through the game, the Rattlers were up 17-13 shots on goal while the Bayhawks were up by three goals on the board.
The Rattlers picked up the second half action as (A) John Grant notched A two-point goal off an assist from A Casey Powell. Baltimore (A) Gary Gait countered with A Bayhawks goal from A feed by (M) Paul Cantebene with 13:02 remaining in the third quarter putting the Bayhawks ahead 10-8. Rochester remained close on Baltimore's heels with an unassisted diving goal from former Bayhawk, (A) Andrew "Buggs" Combs leaving the Rattlers within one point. Rochester nearly tied up the score with less than nine minutes to go in the quarter, but the goal was waived off due to a pushing call on Baltimore (D) Shawn Nadelen. Nadelen's penalty was followed by constant physical man-on-man action at both goals. Finally, Baltimore (M) Josh Sims looked to increase the Bayhawks lead as he scored off an assist from (M) Jeff Sonke to put the Bayhawks up 11-9. Rochester refused to back down as (A) Andrew "Buggs" Combs tallied his second goal of the game off an assist from (M) AJ Shannon with 4:14 remaining to put the Rattlers within one goal of the Bayhawks. With less than two minutes remaining in the quarter, Baltimore (M) Josh Sims found the net on a goal assisted by (M) Mark Frye. A Tom Marechek followed with an unassisted goal off A blocked shot from (A) Mikey Powell with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The score at the conclusion to the third quarter was 13-10 in favor of Baltimore.
The Bayhawks extended their lead early in the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal by (M) Josh Sims putting Baltimore up 14-10. (A) Gary Gait followed with his fourth goal of the game with 10:19 remaining while (M) Paul Cantabene tallied another unassisted goal off an incredible move through the legs and past Rochester (G) Tilman Johnson to put the Bayhawks ahead by six goals, the largest lead of the game to this point. Rochester refused to remain quiet as (M) Casey Powell notched his third goal of the game on an unassisted shot with 8:45 remaining in the game. With 7:22 remaining, (A) Gary Gait found the net off an assist from (A) Tom Marechek as Rochester (G) Tilman Johnson went down with the ball into the net. Gait returned to the net with 6:24 remaining for an unassisted score, his sixth of the game, off an impressive behind-the-back shot on net, making the score 18-11 in favor of Baltimore. Rochester attempted to catch up with Baltimore as (A) Casey Powell found the net on (A) goal assisted by (A) Jason Doneger. With four minutes remaining in the game, Bayhawks A Mark Frye scored his second goal off an assist from (M) Gavin Prout putting the Bayhawks up by seven points with A score of 19-12. Rochester (A) John Grant was called for unnecessary roughness with under three minutes remaining and Baltimore followed the penalty with another goal, this time by (M) Drew Pfarr for his first of the game off an assist from (M) David Curry. Baltimore's lead increased as (A) Tom Marechek tallied his fourth goal of the game off an assist from (M) David Curry. The penalties also continued in A hard-hitting fourth quarter as Baltimore (M) Mark Frye was caught slashing with 1:42 remaining. Rochester made one final attempt at catching up with the Bayhawks when (M) AJ Shannon scored a goal from a pass by (M) Casey Powell with 1:35 remaining. The final goal of the game came from (A) Tom Marechek, five goals total, on an assist from (A) Gary Gait who himself had the most goals this game for the Bayhawks. The final score from Johnny Unitas Stadium was 22-13 with the Bayhawks coming out on top for their fifth straight game this season in front of 4,623 fans.
The Bayhawks travel to Long Island to take on the Lizards on Thursday, June 30, 2005. They return to Johnny Unitas Stadium on July 10, following the MLL Wild West Tour All-Star Showdown in Denver, CO at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium.
