Balanced Attack Leads No. 6 Georgetown Past Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 29, 2009) – Sophomore Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) scored the first two goals of her Rutgers career, but it was not enough as the Scarlet Knights fell to No. 6 Georgetown, 9-5, Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. Senior goalkeeper Sandra Abel (Monrovia, Md.) also played well for RU, posting eight saves.
"We did not come out the way we wanted to in the beginning of the game, and you can't do that against the sixth-ranked team in the country," said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. "But the girls played well defensively and Sandy had a great game, we just could not quite pull it out."
Juniors Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) and Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.), as well as sophomore Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.), each scored one goal apiece. Junior Meghan Flanagan (Medford, N.J.) and senior Michelle Poole (Long Valley, N.J.) tallied assists for the Scarlet Knights, who outshot their opponent 23-18 and grabbed five more groundballs (22-17). For Flanagan, it was her team-high 14th assist of the season.
Georgetown scored quickly, tallying five of the game's first six goals. RU mounted a comeback to end the first half with two of the stanza's last three goals, and the Hoyas went into halftime with a 7-3 edge.
Rutgers' defense stiffened in the second period and allowed only two scores. Unfortunately, Georgetown held the Scarlet Knights to two goals in the stanza as well, and won the game 9-5.
RU will take to the road for a four-game trip, starting with Louisville on April 3 at 3:00 p.m.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team used a total team effort to down the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights, 9-5, Sunday afternoon. The victory capped off a four-game road swing and improved No. 6 Georgetown to 2-0 in BIG EAST play as well as 7-3 on the season. Six different players scored as the Hoyas managed to hold off the Scarlet Knights.
Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) and Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) started out the scoring with a pair of unassisted goals to give GU a 2-0 lead six minutes in. Rutgers, coming off of a big win over No. 13/13 Loyola Friday evening, answered with a score of its own but the Hoya offense fired back.
Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) and Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr Academy) each hit free position shots and Molly Ford (Riesterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added one of her own to make it 5-1 at 17:53.
Rutgers finished the half with two more scores, but Kirr matched it off of an unassisted tally and Megan Bloomer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) added her fourth of the season at 5:14 to make the score, 7-3, at the break.
Both offenses quieted down in the second half but even with fewer goals, the Hoyas managed to maintain the lead.
The Scarlet Knights scored first with a shot from Brooke Cantwell to pull within three. That would be as close as they would get as Ford took the pass from Kirr and found the back of the net. Giles then notched her second goal of the afternoon to give GU the four-score advantage.
A late Rutgers goal made the final, 9-5, as Georgetown cruised to the victory.
Kirr, Ford and Giles each notched two goals and Kirr posted GU's lone assist of the day. The Hoyas were outshot, 23-18, but had the advantage in possession with nine draw controls to Rutgers' seven. Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) received the win in goal with nine saves on the afternoon.
The Hoyas will return home on Friday against No. 7/8 Syracuse at 6:00 p.m. The game will be the first-ever contest under the new lights at Multi-Sport Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Chuck Timanus will be available at www.GUHoyas.com
