Fourteen Score in Fairfield's Win at Manhattan
On a cool and rainy afternoon, 14 different Fairfield University women's lacrosse players scored at least once in a 22-6 defeat of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League win over host Manhattan College on Sunday. The win improves the Stags to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Jaspers fall to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The Fairfield offense was slow to get started not scoring in the for nearly eight minutes, but the defense was up to the task, allowing the Jaspers to score only once, 32 seconds into the half. Rebecca White put Fairfield on the board, scoring back-to-back goals with 22:26 and 20:08 to play in the first, for a lead the Stags would not relinquish.
The teams combined for three goals in a 32 seconds span, beginning with a Brittany Bare goal at 17:42, giving Fairfield a 3-1 lead. Manhattan tallied a goal 11 seconds later to get back within one goal, but White ended the scoring flurry at 17:10, netting a pass from Abbey Goodwin, for a 4-2 edge. Manhattan got within one midway in the first half, but would never tie the score.
Bare scored for the second time with 12:44 remaining in the opening period, starting a 6-0 Fairfield run over an eight minute span, expanding the one goal advantage to a 10-3 lead. The Jaspers put a temporary stop to the Stags offensive explosion with a tally with 2:13 to paly in the half, but White and Kylee Martin scored in the final 67 seconds to give the Stags a 12-4 halftime advantage.
The Stags offense stayed on track to start the second half, scoring the first seven goals of the period, with six different players scoring, to make the score 21-4. Paige Matteao scored the final goal of the run for the Stags, with 7:37 to play, her first collegiate goal. Megan Daly also recorded her first collegiate tally in the game for Fairfield, netting the team's 22nd goal with 2:47 remaining in the game.
Kristen Coleman was the team's leading point scorer on the afternoon finishing with six points. She tallied three goals and three assists, with two of each coming in the opening run of the second half. White finished with five points, including four goals. Kylee Martin scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, while also dishing out an assist. Bare and Goodwin both also scored twice in the game for Fairfield, with Goodwin adding an assist. Kim Fuchs had a goal and an assist in the win.
Erin Rigby, Alex Clark, Daly, Katie MacKay, Kate Reardon, Kate McKinley, Matteo and Katie Phillips all also scored once for Fairfield.
Lauren Chatnik played 55:06 in net for the Stags to earn the win. She made nine saves, five in the first-half, and allowed five goals. Kelley Brady played the final 4:54 in the cage, making two stops and allowing one goal.
Fairfield won 15-30 draw controls in the game, while out shooting Manhattan 33-31. The Stags also held a 16-10 advantage in ground balls, but committed one more turnover then the host, 15-14.
The Stags return to action on Friday, April 3, to host Marist. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
