Big Third Quarter Lifts Georgetown Past Mount St. Mary's
Emmitsburg, Md. (March 31, 2009) -- Georgetown scored six goals in the third quarter to earn a 12-4 win over Mount St. Mary's in men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 10 saves in the loss for the Mount.
Trailing 5-2 at the half, the Mount saw Georgetown (4-5) outscore the Mountaineers 6-1 in the decisive third quarter. Ricky Mirabito's goal started a Georgetown run of five goals in a span of 5:59 to break the game open. Andrew Brancaccio completed a hat trick, Dan D'Agnes scored twice, and Dan Hostetler finished the run for the Hoyas.
The Mount's Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) stopped the streak with an extra-man goal before Georgetown's Craig Dowd beat the third-quarter buzzer to make the score 10-3.
After a Georgetown goal midway through the fourth quarter, the Mount's Mark Stapor (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) converted a nice pass from Doug Freidman (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) to make the score 12-4. It was Freidman's first assist of the season.
Georgetown opened the scoring early with a pair of goals in the first 2:10 of the game. The Mount weathered the early outburst and cut the deficit in half on a Mike Adkins (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) goal at the 8:36 mark. D'Agnes scored with 1:10 left in the quarter to make the score 3-1.
Brancaccio and Adam Donahue recorded back-to-back goals to take a 5-1 lead before freshman Kyle Yates (Solomons, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored his first collegiate goal for the Mount to cut the deficit to 5-2 at the half.
Georgetown outshot the Mount 38-19 in the game and held a 39-29 advantage in ground balls. Brancaccio led the Hoyas with three goals while Shannon and Donahue added a goal and an assist each.
Stapor led the Mount offense with a goal and an assist in the contest. Face-off man Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) went 10-9 on face-offs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls in the game. Defensemen Brendan Flanagan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Russell Moncure (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) each had six ground balls in the loss.
Goalkeeper DiBartolo made 10 saves in 41:02 of action for the Mount while back-up keeper A.J. Schauffler (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernardsville) made three saves in 18:12 for the Mount. Jack Davis made three saves in 50:38 for the Hoyas.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Canisius.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Dan D'Agnes (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior midfielder Andrew Brancaccio /Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) each scored three times and eighth different players registered goals as the No. 20-ranked Georgetown University men's lacrosse team scored six times in the third quarter en route to a 12-4 win over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the second win in the last three games for the Hoyas, who improve to 4-5 overall, while the Mount falls to 1-6 overall. The game was also the first time a Georgetown team had limited an opponent to less than five goals since beating Loyola, 7-4, on April 16, 2005.
The Hoyas led 5-2 at halftime and scored five times unanswered in the third quarter and added a sixth goal with one second left to put the game away. Brancaccio scored the third of his three goals in the quarter, while D'Agnes scored two times, juniors Rickey Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) and Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore Dan Hostetler (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) scored one apiece.
