Poets Have Right Stuff in Victory over Boxers

FOREST GROVE - Pacific could not pen the ending they wanted as Whittier held the Boxers scoreless in the first half and went on to a 15-5 victory in women's lacrosse action at Lincoln Park Stadium.

The Poets (6-5) scored the first 10 goals of the half to build more than enough for the winning cushion. Pacific (4-4) did not get on the board until Lilia Lee (Jr., Waimanalo, Hawaii) connected on an unassisted strike five minutes into the second half.

Lee led Pacific with two goals while Monica Smith (Fr., Wilsonville, Ore.), Shanlyn Souza (Sr., Koloa, Hawaii) and Abby Coleman (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) had one goal apiece. Sherise Varga led Whittier with four goals, all in the first half, Lauren Bibby added three goals while Ana Garcia, Alex Holtz and Emily Mukai had two goals each.

Varga opened scoring just a minute into the game, scoring off a Bibby assist. She went on to score three goals in the first eight minutes of the match, with her third coming off a Mukai assist for a 4-0 Whittier lead. The scoring streak continued right up until the end of the stanza when Garcia connected with 12 seconds left to give the Poets a 9-0 halftime lead.

Holtz opened the second half with her goal at the 27:25 mark before Lee broke the Boxers' scoreless string with 25:41 remaining. That started a string of four straight goals for the Boxers. Which culminated on Coleman's goal with 18:18 to go that brought Pacific with 10-4 with 18 minutes to go. The two teams traded goals before the Poets scored four straight to end the game.

Whittier outshot Pacific 40-23 and held a 34-30 advantage in ground balls, while the Boxrs held a 12-10 edge in draw controls. Valerie Nelson (Sr., Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) made one save in eight minutes of work for the Boxers in goal, while Heidi Curry (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) made 10 saves. Whittier netminder Conny Joel made 10 saves in the win.

Pacific takes to the road for a match with Pomona-Pitzer on Friday in Tacoma before returning home for a Sunday morning game with Dallas.
