Wingate Rallies Past Knights with Big Second Half

LAURINBURG, N.C. - St. Andrews Presbyterian College held a one-goal lead at halftime but Wingate University scored eight straight goals in the second half en route to a 14-9 NCAA Division II men's lacrosse victory on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field.

Senior Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) scored a game-high four goals and finished with a game-high six points to lead the Bulldogs to their third straight victory as Wingate evened its overall record to 6-6. Sophomore Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.) recorded his third hat trick of the season to pace the Knights, who lost their fourth consecutive game falling to 3-9 overall.

St. Andrews held a 47-33 shot advantage but Wingate freshman goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) had a season-high 16 saves. Dlugozima (5-2) and the Bulldogs defense held the Knights scoreless for more than 18 minutes of game time during the critical 8-0 second-half run.

Senior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va,) and sophomore Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) both had four points for St. Andrews. Loda netted a pair of goals while handing out two assists. Parsons scored once and provided a game-high three assists.

The Knights scored the first two goals but Wingate tied the game at 2-2 with the final two tallies of the first quarter. St. Andrews once again took a two-goal lead with the first two goals of the second frame but the Bulldogs knotted the score for the second time (5-5) with three of the next four scores. Loda then found the back of the cage with 74 seconds left to give the Knights a one-goal edge at the midway break.

Loda set up Hoover in the first minute of the second half before the two regional foes traded the next two goals. Senior Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) pulled the Bulldogs within one before sophomore Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.) netted his lone goal midway through the third quarter to extend the Knights lead to two goals (8-6) for the fifth and final time.

Wingate registered the final three goals of the third quater to take a 9-8 edge into the final frame. Hodsdon deadlocked the score at 8-8 with just over two minutes left in the third before senior Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) put the visitors ahead on an accurate shot with 2.4 seconds showing on the clock.

The Bulldogs pulled away with the first five goals of the final stanza that was started with the only man-up goal of the afternoon scored by freshman Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.). Hodsdon scored two straight goals in the run and freshman Derek Malone (Cookeville, Tenn.) capped the surge with his first collegiate goal.

SAPC held a 52-42 ground ball edge and won 17-of-27 total face offs. Young – who currently ranks third in the nation with 9.27 ground balls per game and 15th nationally with a .549 face off win percentage – won all 17 face offs for the Knights and grabbed a game-high 14 ground balls.

Hauswith finished with one goal and one assist and senior Phil Hardy (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a goal for a third straight game. Sophomore goalie Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) took the loss allowing nine goals over the first 45 minutes while making four saves. Senior backup Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) had three saves in the fourth quarter but let up five goals.

Wingate was 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities while successfully killing its only trip to the penalty box. Senior Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) was the Bulldogs only other multiple-goal scorer as Wingate recorded goals off the sticks of nine different players. Otterblad supplied three goals and one assist. Sophomore Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Williams, who currently ranks tied for 10th nationally with 3.0 goals per game, was held to one goal on Wednesday.

St. Andrews will visit Conference Carolinas rival Limestone College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. while Wingate hosts Deep South Conference foe and No. 8 nationally ranked Mars Hill College at the same time Saturday.
