Whitter Can't Fool McDaniel, as Green Terror Take 4/1 Win
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) each recorded three goals and an assist to lead McDaniel to a 13-8 victory over Whittier in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (7-2) built a 6-1 in the first quarter and cruised to a 6-1 record in its seven non-conference games this season. Daniel McQuade paced the Poets (5-7) with four goals.
After Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and McQuade exchanged markers in the game's first 4:13, McDaniel reeled off the game's next five to build a five-goal lead. Hatton bookended the run with two of his three tallies.
McQuade pulled the visitors within 6-2 just 21 seconds into the second period before Preston re-established the five-goal advantage 1 minute, 19 seconds later. Four straight Poet tallies, including back-to-back scores from Sean McCorroll trimmed the defict to 7-5 at the intermission.
Rickels finished a Hatton feed nine seconds into the third quarter before a McQuade man-up goal made it an 8-6 game with 13:04 to play in the period. Four straight McDaniel goals pushed the lead to its largest at 12-6 with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter.
Mike Neumyer and McQuade closed the margin to 12-8 with 5:56 to play but Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) set the final margin with an unassisted tally in the final minute.
Dean added an 8-for-19 showing on faceoffs while Barnes was 4 for 5 at the X.
