Crusaders Avenge Loss to SAPC with Nine-Goal 2nd Half
BELMONT, N.C.-Belmont Abbey College held St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a season-low six goals as the Crusaders avenged a loss to the Knights earlier in the season with a 14-6 Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse victory on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.) and freshman Cara Manas (Harwood, Md.) each netted two goals for the Lady Knights, who had their three-game win streak snapped as the fall to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Crusaders outscored SAPC 9-2 in the second half to improve to 11-4 overall and 7-3 in the league after their seventh win in their last nine games.
The Lady Knights led 3-1 halfway through the opening stanza, but the Crusaders scored three unanswered goals to take their first lead at 4-3. St. Andrews' junior Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) knotted the score with 1:06 left but Laurie Jordan gave the Abbey the lead for good with the second of her five goals with 19 seconds remaining on the scoreboard to lift the Abbey to a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Brown, the reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, has scored in all 13 games this season.
Belmont Abbey dominated the second half, limiting the Lady Knights to just two goals while its offense exploded for nine, the final three coming by Jordan in a five minute span to provide the winning eight-goal margin.
Jordan finished with five goals, while Samantha Hooker had three. Tara Chmil and Kristyn Kinsey both had a pair, while Shannon Farden and Brianna Dignan both had one. Chmil tied for the game-high with two assists, while Morgan Cross, Kerri Gut, Hooker and Jordan all had one each.
Knights' senior Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) had one goal while classmate Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) provided one assist.
Defensively, the Abbey cause 16 of the Lady Knights 20 turnovers as senior All-American defender Theresa Nolan had five to go along with five ground balls. Goalkeeper Kate Gavin made nine saves and led all players with six ground balls as the Abbey held the edge in that category 28-21.
Senior goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) made 12 saves, nine in the first half, while scooping up a team-high four ground balls for the Knights.
