No. 4 Limestone Saints Fly Past Royals
GAFFNEY, S.C.- Limestone College's Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) scored 9 goals to lead her team to a 22-12 victory against Queens University on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. The Lady Saints, ranked No. 4 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, climb to 8-1 in Conference Carolinas play (10-1 overall). The Royals slip to 3-5 in the league (3-10 overall).
The Lady Saints dominated the game, as they outshot the visitors 46-22. Limestone won 25 of the game's 36 draw controls, and recorded 14 ground balls to Queens' 9. Limestone was also 11-12 in clears while Queens had 13 successful attempts and 4 broken clears.
Queens was 1-1 on extra-man opportunities while the Lady Saints were 2-2. Limestone converted six goals from its 12 free-position shots, as the Royals were 1-1.
Limestone's Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) and Katie Ilott (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) scored three goals each as Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) scored twice. Howard and Lickert each tallied two assists. Kaitlyn Liccion (Auburn, N.Y.), Kelly Oterson (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va.), Morgan Smith (Greer, S.C.), and Lauren Smith (Greer, S.C.) also added goals in the victory. Three of Wise's nine goals were from free-position shots.
Wise also led the Lady Saints with five draw controls. Howard posted four draw controls for the game. Joan Stroud (Monrovia, Md.), Morgan Smith, Albro, and Ilott caused two turnovers apiece. Starting goalkeeper Brigid Milchling (Cockeysville, Md.) had four saves in the opening 42 minutes of the contest. Michaela Reynolds (Columbia, Md.) played out the final 18 minutes in goal for Limestone.
Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn.) and Kelly Wrightson (Germantown, Md.) each recorded a hat trick for Queens, as Brittany Philip (Painted Post, N.Y.) scored twice. Duffey also dished out a game-high four assists.
The Royals' goalkeeper, Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md.), had 17 saves during the contest and scooped up three ground balls. Alyssa Hughes (Damascus, Md.) also picked up three ground balls.
The Lady Saints built a 14-4 lead at the end of the first half, while both teams scored eight goals each in the second period.
The Lady Saints host Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Saints Field. Saturday will also be Senior Day for Limestone. The Royals travel to Laurinburg, N.C., on Saturday to play St. Andrews at 2:00 p.m.
