Keller's Five Goals Lift Tigers Over Jackets

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 1, 2009) - Freshman Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) had a breakout day with five goals and two assists to help his Tigers gain their second straight win. In a back and forth battle, it was Hampden-Sydney that prevailed 12-9.

Randolph-Macon was the first to strike scoring just 30 seconds into the game, but Hampden-Sydney came right back as Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) notched his first goal of the day just six seconds later to tie the game. In the seesaw first quarter, both teams traded goals and ended the stanza at a 3-3 tie.

Randolph-Macon started the second quarter just as the first, with Patrick Egan making the score 4-3. For the next 14 minutes, it was all Hampden-Sydney. Keller tallied two back to back goals with Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport) and Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) tacking on two more to give Hampden-Sydney a 7-4 advantage at intermission.

Randolph-Macon came out in the second half fired up, reeling off four straight goals and giving the Yellow Jackets their second lead of the day at 8-7. That's when the rookie had enough.

Keller continued to take over the game scoring the game-tying and game-winning goals. Once the fourth quarter started, he tacked on one more to put the Tigers up 10-8. Mahoney also caught fire in the stretch scoring two more of his own.

Randolph-Macon tried to answer, but came up short scoring just one more goal from freshman Tyler Midwinter.

Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's), Bill Tunney (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll), and Mavromatis all led the Tigers in groundballs with five. Tunney also had a standout face-off day winning 13 of his 15 face-offs. Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) had a solid day between the pipes with 10 huge saves on day.

Hampden-Sydney won the groundball battle 39-23 and out shot Randolph-Macon 38-36. The Tigers also dominated in face-offs winning 17 to the Jackets' 7. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 4-5 on the year and 2-0 in the ODAC.

The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, April 4 as they travel to Salem, VA to take on Roanoke College at 2:00pm.

Hampden-Sydney, Va. – Randolph-Macon led 9-8 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Hampden-Sydney outscored the Yellow Jackets 5-1 in the final 19 minutes of regulation as the Tigers grabbed a 12-9 ODAC win.

The contest, which was tied five times, possessed all the features of a rivalry game. Both teams entered the contest with something to prove. R-MC was seeking its first conference win of the 2009 season, while H-SC sought revenge for the Yellow Jackets' 11-9 victory on the last day of the 2008 regular season – a win which catapulted R-MC into the ODAC Tournament and eliminated H-SC from playoff contention.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed a quick 1-0 lead as freshman Brian Rowe netted a goal just 39 seconds after the opening whistle. The Tigers answered on the ensuing faceoff, as H-SC's Thomas Hovis won the draw, raced down the field, and fed Andrew Mahoney for a quick finish. Less than one minute later, R-MC freshman Patrick Egan registered an unassisted goal to give the Jackets a 2-1 lead with 13:31 remaining in the first quarter. H-SC answered again, as midfielder Cole Hawthorne netted a goal 1:34 later. R-MC freshman Kevin Patton registered his first of two goals with 8:04 remaining in the opening quarter, sending a shot into the back of the Tiger cage. The Tigers tallied a tying goal before the close of the first stanza.
