Tars Blank Erksine for First-Ever Shutout Victory

DUE WEST, S.C. (April 3, 2009) - The Rollins women's lacrosse team scored 14 first half goals en route to their first ever shutout with a 17-0 victory over Erskine College on Friday afternoon in Due West, S.C. The Tars (8-2) now look ahead to Sunday when they take on the St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a noon showdown in Laurinburg, N.C. The Flying Fleet drop to 0-12 on the season with the loss.

Senior Goalkeeper Lisa Weber had a fantastic game as she walked away from the afternoon with a 100 percent save percentage after stopping the Flying Fleet's only two shots on goal of the game. Weber recorded her first shutout of her collegiate career, and was solid between the pipes in the full 60 minutes of action as a stingy Rollins defense held Erskine to limited opportunities.

Nine Tars put points on the scoreboard as freshmen duo Mallory Surpless and Bizzie Durell led the team. Surpless took the reins as she netted five goals on the afternoon to lead both teams on the day, while Durell headed-up the team in overall points as her three goals and three assists helped give the Rollins offense an extra boost in the first half.

Joining them were fellow freshmen Tori Snow and Steph Wiedenhofer with two goals each, while Katy Tyszko, Liz Connelly, Alyssa Emens, Lacy Goodwyn, and Marisa Giannerini ripped one goal apiece between the pipes. Along with Durell's three assists, Tyszko also assisted on three, while Snow tallied one on the day.

The Tars jumped out to a quick lead, as Durell ripped an unassisted shot at the 28:53 mark to ignite a four-goal run for the Tars in the first five minutes. Rollins went on to score 14 unanswered tallies in the first 30 minutes of action, hitting a running clock with 10 goals with 17:54 to go in first half, and allowing only one shot that was saved by Weber with five seconds to go before the half.

With a solid defensive line holding the Flying Fleet at bay, the Tars played smart in the second half and kept the ball moving, scoring three more goals as the clock counted down.

The Tars return to action in a highly anticipated showdown at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Sunday at noon. Rollins picked up a big 18-17 sudden-victory win over the Knights back on February 29, 2008, and look to keep their series streak alive on Sunday when they take to the Knight's home turf in Laurinburg, N.C.
