Louisville Comes Back vs. Rutgers for First Big East Win
The University of Louisville lacrosse team, trailing 8-7 with just under ten minutes remaining, scored the final three goals of the match to capture a 10-8 win over visiting Rutgers on Friday afternoon. The win at U of L Lacrosse Stadium was the first BIG EAST win in program history.
Louisville (7-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) started the game with a quick goal in the match's first minute at 29:05 from sophomore Lianne Bobal. Rutgers (4-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) then answered with two goals of their own from Marlena Welsh and Brooke Cantwell respectively.
"After a little bit of a rough start with turnovers we controlled our emotions and really played fifty-five minutes of solid lacrosse," said U of L head coach Kellie Young.
Louisville actually won the turnover battle for the day as they suffered only 18 to Rutgers's 21 total turnovers.
"I'm really proud of our team; this was an exceptional win for us," said Young.
Six Cardinals tallied goals as the team focused on a balanced attack. Sophomore Emily Dashiell paced the Cardinal attack with four goals and two assists and senior goalkeeper Jen Heup made 10 saves to seal the victory.
"Bergan (Foley) was getting face-guarded but was key in setting up next to the offensive sets to let the other players get their shots off and they got inside and finished well, " said Young.
Dashiell scored her first goal on a free position shot at 23:35. Rutgers's Cantwell then countered with two more goals within two minutes at 21:47 and 20:02. With visiting Rutgers leading 4-2 Dashiell added another with an assist from Danielle Hale at 13:44. Less than a minute later Annie McGinley assisted Marlena Welsh for her second goal of the day. The Cardinals rallied back to tie the score 5-5 at halftime with two goals from Dashiell at 8:08 and Kelsey McDowell at 7:06 assisted from Dashiell.
The back and forth scoring affair continued into the second half as Rutgers's Kristen Anderson scored at 27:44 followed by Louisville's Bobal at 26:31 tying the match at six all.
"Rutgers is a very, very good team who has played some of the top five programs to one goal games and for us to not only play with them but win is a huge step for our program," said Young.
Louisville will next host Notre Dame Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at the Lacrosse Stadium. Admission is free.
