Wheaton Suffers First NEWMAC Loss, Falls at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team suffered its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss of the season on Saturday, being dealt a 17-6 setback at Springfield College on Stagg Field. The Lyons slipped to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Pride is now 7-2 and 2-0.

Seniors Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) each netted a hat trick for the Lyons, while Williams also added an assist. Grant now has 98 career points. Sophomore Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) made 11 saves, including eight in the first half.

Springfield scored the opening four goals by the 24:39 mark of the first half before Williams tallied twice in a 2:12 span to make it 4-2, but the Pride tacked on the next 11 markers by 23:07 of the second period to put the game away. Behind three goals from Grant and another by Williams, the Lyons netted four of the contest's final six tallies.

Sophomore Kaeleigh Lannan (Derry, NH/New Hampton School) netted six goals for the Pride, while senior Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) recorded two goals and two assists. Junior Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) turned aside seven shots in nearly 46 minutes for the win.

Wheaton returns to action when it hosts Amherst College on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
