Boston College Drops Close Decision to No. 9 Virginia
Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's lacrosse team lost to the University of Virginia 11-9 on Saturday in the Eagles ACC home opener. The loss drops the Eagles to 7-5 on the season and 0-4 in the ACC with one conference game to play against the Duke University Blue Devils on Saturday April 11 at 1:00 p.m.
Virginia scored the first two goals of the game before seniors Jenna McCabe and Lauren Fitzpatrick combined to put the Eagles on the board.
The Cavaliers started to pull away leading 4-1 after five minutes of play, before BC started to reel them back in with goals by Hannah Alley and Maura Mahoney. The Eagles pulled within two goals at the end of the frame, making it a 6-4 game, but Virginia's Blair Weymouth scored with one second remaining in the period to give the Cavaliers a three goal lead heading into halftime.
In the second period Mahoney scored three consecutive goals to bring the Eagles within one goal of tying the game but Virginia then rattled off two back-to-back's the give them the 10-8 lead.
The Eagles fought down the home stretch with a goal from McCabe and a tally from Kristin Igoe to make it a two goal game at 11-9 but were unable to overcome the two goal lead as the clock expired.
Senior Attack Maura Mahoney led the Eagles in scoring with four goals in the game and goalkeeper Katie Monaghan made 10 saves in the game.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, April 8, against cross-town rivals Boston University at 4:00 p.m.
The Eagles will be hosting the Terriers in the Under Armour Power in Pink game to support breast cancer research and awareness. The game will feature raffles and prizes and a commemorative t-shirt to mark the event.

The win improves the Cavaliers to 8-5 on the season and gives them a 2-3 mark in ACC play, while Boston College falls to 7-5 and 0-4 in league action.
Senior Blair Weymouth led the attack with four goals and junior Brittany Kalkstein notched three. Senior Ashley McCulloch and junior Kaitlin Duff each had a goal and an assist, while senior Jenny Hauser and freshman Julie Gardner each had a goal.
Maura Mahoney had four goals for the Eagles, while Jenna McCabe tallied three scores. In goal, Katie Monaghan stopped 10 shots.
The Cavaliers came out with something to prove, tallying four of the first five goals in the opening five minutes of the game. Kalkstein jumpstarted the offense, winning six draw controls on the day – moving her into a tie for third on Virginia's single season records with 54 this year - while Gardner got the scoring starting 30 seconds into play. Kalkstein then converted a free position goal, before Boston College got on the board at 27:47.
Duff kept the Eagles from knotting the score at 2-2, notching a goal at 26:10, before Kalkstein tallied her second at 25:37 to push Virginia ahead 4-1.
Boston College scored a second at 17:39 and Weymouth converted a free position shot at 15:57 to make it 5-2 in favor of Virginia.
The Eagles went on to score two of the next three goals – sandwiching two around an unassisted score from McCulloch at 12:15 - but after a misfire from the Cavaliers, Weymouth recovered to find the back of the net as time expired to give Virginia a 7-4 halftime advantage.
Weymouth opened the second half converting a free position shot for her second-consecutive goal at 26:29, but Mahoney would match the Cavaliers, scoring back-to-back goals within a minute to pull the Eagles to two, at 8-6, by the 20:42 mark, and then tacked on a third at 15:33.
