Lucy Lifts Villanova to Sudden Victory Over Aggies
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Senior Taylor Lucy scored five goals, including the game-winner with 23 seconds remaining in the second sudden-victory period, to lead Villanova to an 11-10 thriller over UC Davis in non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse action at Villanova Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Aggies fall to 3-8 for the season. The Wildcats improve to 5-6.
Sophomore Christina Corsa scored four goals with a pair of assists to lead UC Davis offensively. Gina Hoffmire also supplied four goals, while junior Britt Farquharson added two. Sophomore goalie Alyssa Cranska posted a career-high 16 saves in net for the Aggies. In addition to Lucy's scoring output, Samantha McKillip and Katie Stone contributed two goals for VU.
UC Davis opened to a 4-1 lead, getting three Corsa goals within the first seven minutes of play. However, the Wildcats scored four straight to finish the first half, heading into the break with a 5-4 lead. Hoffmire regained the lead for the Aggies with back-to-back eight-meter goals in the second half, then Lucy scored two goals in a 3-0 VU run that put the hosts up by an 8-6 advantage.
Hoffmire had more goals and Corsa recorded both of her assists in 4-0 run from the 44th through 55th minutes, putting UC Davis up by two near the end of regulation. Again, Villanova responded, first with McKillip's goal at the 57:09 mark to cut the Aggie lead to 10-9. Wildcat defender Amy Jackson won the ensuing draw, then McKenna hit the equalizer on a put-back with 1:48 remaining. Jackson came through defensively as well, posting a steal against the Aggies with four seconds left in the second period, forcing the extra frames.
The Aggies were unable to get a shot off in the first three-minute overtime, despite having a 12-on-11 personnel advantage for most of the period. Sophomore Jacklyn Taylor won the draw on the second overtime, but again the Aggies were unable to put an atttempt on the Wildcat cage. In fact, the only shot attempt by either team in the regular overtime period came from Aggie sophomore Rachael Martinez, but VU goalkeeper Maggie Langan was there for the save.
The Wildcats outshot the Aggies, 3-1, in the first sudden-victory period. Erica Rybinski's shot hit the crossbar, and Cranska stopped McKenna's second effort with four ticks left. Langan (against Hoffmire) and Cranska (against McKenna) each had saves in the second sudden-victory stanza, but Lucy was able to hit the second-chance shot with 23 seconds left in the period.
