No. 14 Wesleyan Runs Away from Colby for NESCAC Win
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Sat., April 4, 2009) -- Senior All-American Russ Follansbee led the way as Wesleyan University (8-2, 4-2 NESCAC) recovered from an early 2-0 deficit to post an 11-3 NESCAC victory over visiting Colby College (5-4, 2-3). Follansbee, who leads the Cardinals in scoring this year with 43 points (26-17-43) and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time Wesleyan scoring list with 172 points, scored three unassisted goals on runs from behind the net in a span of 9:40 between the first and second periods. His second goal of the game with :17 showing the in first quarter put Wesleyan ahead for good, 3-2.
By the time the Wesleyan scoring run ended on the third goal of the game by Colby's top scorer junior Whit McCarthy at 4:05 of the third quarter, the Cardinals had built an 8-2 advantage. In the interim, Colby was held scoreless for almost 35 minutes with Wesleyan starting goalie senior Mike Borrero collecting 10 saves.
Wesleyan scored the game's last three goals for the eight-goal cushion. Follansbee also had three assists in the contest, setting up senior Adam Kirk for Wesleyan sixth goal late in the second quarter and freshman DJ Bernatavitz early in the third period. He got his final point when junior Lonny Blumenthal connected at 6:02 of the fourth quarter for the final goal of the day. Also supporting the Wesleyan offense with two goals and an assist was senior Dan Latzman.
While McCarthy had all three goals for the Mules, upping his season total to 27, senior Caddy Brooks had all three Colby assists, bringing his team-high total in that department to 15 to go with 14 goals for 29 points this year. McCarthy also has nine assists this year for 36 points. Senior Alex Farmer and junior Tom Gianakos combined for eight saves in the Colby net.
Wesleyan, ranked 14th nationally in the latest USILA Division III poll, improved its all-time record vs. Colby to 9-2 by defeating the Mules for the seventh straight time. Ahead for Wesleyan is a home game with Western Connecticut Tuesday, April 7 while the next action for Colby is a home game with Southern Maine Wednesday, April 8.
