Stevenson Rolls Past Lynchburg
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton) and junior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) combined for eight goals and 13 points to help the Stevenson University women's lacrosse team rally from a three-goal deficit en route to an 18-5 victory over Lynchburg Saturday at the Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (6-5) won their third game out of the last four with 16 unanswered goals after falling behind 4-1 in the first 10 minutes.
Weiss scored the first of her career-high six goals with 17:22 left in the first half to cut the Hornet lead in half before Lindsay Gengras scored exactly one minute later to push the lead back to three, 5-2.
However, that would be the last goal for Lynchburg as the Stevenson defense, led by junior Brittany Connelly (Catonsville/Catonsville) held the Hornets scoreless for the final 46:22.
After back-to-back goals by Zegowitz and Weiss, freshman Spencer Kraus (Mt. Airy/South Carroll) scored her fifth goal in the last two games to tie the game at 5-5. Kraus finished the game with a goal, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Weiss then gave the Mustangs the lead for good with her third game-winning goal of the season on her third of the game, assisted by Zegowitz, with 8:23 left in the half.
Zegowitz, who had two goals and four assists, would find Weiss again just over four minutes later before freshman Kristin Gancarz (Crownsville/Old Mill) scored with just 37 seconds left in the half to give Stevenson an 8-5 halftime advantage.
Gancarz finished the game with a career-high three goals after totaling two goals and two assists, both career-highs in Wednesday's win at Wesley.
In addition to the offensive contributions of Weiss, Zegowitz and Gancarz, the defense received a boost from Kraus and sophomore Devan Malone (Highland/River Hill).
Malone finished the game with a career-high 10 saves in 46 shutout minutes in goal to earn her first career victory after entering in relief of freshman starter Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough).
Sophomore Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) had two goals while Connelly was one of five players to score one. She also had two draw controls. Christina Tran made 12 saves for Lynchburg (5-6) who lost its fourth-straight.
Stevenson will conclude its 2009 regular season home schedule on Thursday when it hosts a non-conference contest with McDaniel at 4:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its three seniors in Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old Mill), Tricia Kauffman (Cockeysville/Dulaney) and Jess Dixon (Aberdeen/Aberdeen).
