Seniors Shine for #1 Salisbury Against No. 18 St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 1 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team defeated Capital Athletic Conference foe No. 18 St. Mary's (Md.) College on a windy Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium before a crowd of 450. The victory is the 54th straight conference win for the Sea Gulls since 2003. Salisbury honored its seniors before the game as many had a stand out game on Senior Day.

Salisbury (12-1, 5-0 CAC) came out on fire as it scored nine goals in the first 20 minutes to set the tone. St. Mary's (9-4, 4-1 CAC) ended the 9-0 run with a pair of goals by Maggie Macleay. The Sea Gulls responded with three more goals before a St. Mary's netted a goal 27 seconds before the half as the team went into the break with SU up 12-3.

St. Mary's came out strong in the second half and netted back-to-back goals before Salisbury answered with a goal each by Logan Bilderback and Robyn Bishop. SU led 14-6 midway through the second half before it added five consecutive goals to place the game out of reach. The Seahawks scored two more goals in the final five minutes.

Bishop led Salisbury's attack and all-scorers with five goals and one assist. The senior All-American midfielder scored two free position goals and two of her tallies were unassisted. Fellow Senior Courtney Sorenson racked up three goals on seven shots and pulled down two draw controls. Junior Beth Rhodey also added three goals.

The maroon and gold received two goals and one assist apiece from sophomore Logan Bilderback, Meagan Osipowich and Trish DiGirolomo. Senior Sarah McKinley, freshman Alyssa Fowler and freshman Georgi Porter finished out the scoring with one goal apiece for SU.

Salisbury received a valiant defensive effort from seniors Sarah Maggio, Holly Johnson and Sarah McKinley and junior Maddie Goetz as they held the Seahawks to eight goals for the game. Senior goalie Sonja Stuart played the full 60 minutes for the Gulls and finished with four saves.

St. Mary's was lead by senior Lauren Carrier with two goals and two assists. Carrier was featured in Sports Illustrated for breaking the record of scoring at least one goal in consecutive games and continued her streak against Salisbury to put her record at 55 games. The Seahawk's also received two goals each from Caitlin Nichols and Macleay.

The Sea Gulls will next travel up Route 13 to face conference opponent, Wesley College on Tuesday, April 7, at 4:00 p.m.

Salisbury, Md. – The 18th-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team faced its second top-five team in less than a week as the Seahawks suffered a 20-8 Capital Athletic Conference setback at the hands of No. 1 Salisbury University Saturday afternoon.

The loss was the first for the Seahawks (9-4, 4-1 CAC) in conference play and marked the first time this season that St. Mary's has lost back-to-back games.

Salisbury (12-1, 5-0 CAC) remains undefeated in league action as nine different Sea Gulls found the back of the net on Senior Day with all but three having multiple goal efforts. Senior midfielder Robyn Bishop (Columbia, Md./River Hill) led all scorers with five goals and six points, while junior attacker Beth Rhodey (Fallston, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added three goals and a helper and senior midfielder Courtney Sorenson (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) chipped in a hat trick.

The Sea Gulls set the tone early with nine unanswered goals to start the game, including a hat trick from Bishop and two from Rhodey. Back-to-back goals by sophomore attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) finally put St. Mary's on the board with six minutes left in the first half. SU netted three of the half's final four goals for a 12-3 halftime lead.
