No. 17 Cabrini Wins Fourth Straight, Downs Drew
MADISON, N.J. – Facing a very strong Cabrini Cavalier team, Drew mens lacrosse suffered a 12-5 loss at Ranger Stadium. The Cavaliers came into the match ranked #17 in the NCAA and showed why they had been ranked as high as fifth in the country by opening up a seven goal lead before the Rangers scored. Sean McNulty and Mike Sayers each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers while Scott Reimer led Cabrini with five goals and two assists.
The guests took control from the beginning of the game. Mike Celentano was forced into making a pair of nice saves in the opening minutes of play, but was helpless on Reimers opener with 10:42 left in the first. After the Rangers first real possession, garnered through a Jon Dowiak face-off win, resulted in a shot fired high of the target by Jon Bucknam, the Cavaliers went up by two again through Reimer.
Celentano made a nice save on Paul Skulskis shot, but he rebound fell to Reimer alone in front. He stuffed home from a 2-0 lead with 7:35 in the period. Casey Grugan scored a point in his 48th consecutive game with the final goal of the quarter with 2:44 left.
Drew went down 5-0 in the second as Reimer scored one and set up another in the middle of the period. Drews offense was producing a bit more, but the Cavaliers defense prevented any clear chances for the Rangers. Mostly, Drew was forced to shot from distance while getting hit, resulting in a number of wide or high attempts.
The third period started terribly for the Rangers with Reimer setting up Rich Romanelli just over a minute into the half for a 6-0 Cabrini lead. After Greg Reading drew a nice save out of Cabrinis Kevin Chenowith, Grugan set up Brian Hill for the 7-0 lead. The Rangers finally got on the board via Rex Riley with 10:03 left in the quarter.
Drew scored its second with 6:25 left as McNulty found Bucknam open for one of the few times in the game. Bucknam put away his chance to make it 7-2, but Cabrini would counter with two quick goals.
A bad turnover by the Rangers gave Grugan an easy look for his second of the game and thirty seconds later he scored again; this time through a ripped shot from the point. Reimer followed up with a pair of late goals to make it 11-2 Cabrini.
The Rangers showed some fight in the fourth quarter as they outscored the visitors, 3-1. Mike Sayers made a nice move near the crease to net with 13 minutes left in the period. Tyler Morse scored an unassisted goal with eight left, but the Rangers then found any further hopes of a comeback shut down as Chenowith came up with four big saves. Drew got one last goal, through Sean McNulty, with under a minute to play in the game.
The loss ends the Rangers five game winning streak and drops their record to 5-4 on the season. The Rangers three previous losses came by a combined four goals, so this significant defeat, at home no less, serves as a wake-up call ahead of a return to Landmark Conference play against Susquehanna on Friday.
