Johnson Nets Six as #16 Herons Cruise Past Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y.-First-year Lucy Johnson scored a season-high six goals to lead the 16th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over Clarkson this afternoon. The Golden Knights scored the first two goals of the game, but Johnson scored three times during an 8-0 Heron run that put the visitors firmly in control.

William Smith (7-1, 4-0 Liberty) enjoyed a decisive advantage in shots (39-23), ground balls (36-16), and draws (19-10). Johnson also added an assist for a season-high seven points. Sophomore Kara Grogan added four points (3-1), while juniors Sarah Goodkind (3-0), Molly Fitzgerald (2-1), and Brittany Callaghan (1-2) each chipped in three points. Kimberly Loucks paced Clarkson with two goals and an assist.

The Golden Knights (3-6, 0-3) scored twice in the opening three minutes, the Herons pulled even on goals by Goodkind and Fiztgerald. Sophomore Cassie Findlay put William Smith in front 13 seconds after Fitzgerald's strike followed by another Goodkind score.

From there, Johnson took over. She scored three of the next four goals (Goodkind completed her hat trick with the other) and netted five of the final nine goals of the half.

The Herons led 12-3 at the break and expanded their advantage to as many 12 in the second half.

Senior goalie Becky Josefiak earned the win with seven saves, while Hannah Walters turned back 16 shots for Clarkson.

William Smith will be back in action on April 10, when the Herons visit Hamilton. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
