Mount Saint Vincent Nips Ramapo in Overtime

Mahwah, N.J. -- Kelly Martin (Stony Point, N.Y.) scored on a free-position shot with 35 seconds left in the first overtime on Saturday to send the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team to a 13-12 win at Ramapo. Martin finished the contest with five goals and an assist and Karen Laurent (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) made 14 saves in goal for the Dolphins.

Ramapo opened a 7-4 lead in the first half after a pair of Brittany Gazzanigo tallies in the final 6:00 of the period. Mount Saint Vincent cut its deficit to just a single goal, at 8-7, after scoring three straight goals to close the half. Sophomore Lauren Perla (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored two goals over that span, including one on a free-position shot.

The second half was a defensive struggle, but the Mount was able to outscore Ramapo 4-3 in the period to force the extra session. The Dolphins held an 11-10 advantage late in the second half before Jessica Long knotted the score at 11-11 with just less than 6:00 left in regulation time.

In the overtime period Mount Saint Vincent scored two of the three goals to pick up the road victory. Kristen LeGeyt (Stony Point, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the overtime period with 1:56 remaining before Angela Belotta tied the score at 12-12 for the Roadrunners just 50 seconds later. The deciding tally came from Martin with less than a minute remaining to give the Dolphins their third road win of the season.

Martin led all players with five goals in the game with two coming on free-position shots. She also picked up a groundball and won two draw controls. LeGeyt and Perla both recorded three goals for the Dolphins and LeGeyt recorded three draw controls. Both players also finished the game with a caused turnover each.

Lauren played the full 66:00 minutes in the cage for the Dolphins, making her 14 saves. She made seven stops in the first half; six in the second half and one important save in the overtime period. Megan Tierney made 13 saves for the Roadrunners, including seven in the second frame.

Long posted a game-high seven points for Ramapo in the game with four goals and three helpers. Christina Cigolini, Jenna Pfarr and Gazzanigo each scored a pair of goals for the Roadrunners in the contest.

Mount Saint Vincent outshot Ramapo in the game 35-28 and held the edge in draw controls 15-8. The Roadrunners finished with a 7-3 edge in groundballs, while the Mount went 3-10 in free-position opportunities.

The win snaps a two game losing skid for the Dolphins and improves them to 6-3 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action on April 15 when it hosts Skyline Preseason favorite Montclair St. Opening draw is set for 7:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
