Guilford Drops Close ODAC Contest to Randolph-Macon
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Erin Clare Cassidy scored three goals and added two assists in visiting Randolph-Macon College's 12-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse win over Guilford College Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets (5-4, 4-1 ODAC) held off the Quakers' second-half rally as Guilford (4-8, 1-3 ODAC) scored the game's final three goals.
Randolph-Macon trailed 4-3 after Carrie Ernst's goal with 11:17 left in the first half, but responded with five of the next six goals to take a 9-5 halftime lead. Kelly Cramer tallied twice and Cassidy notched both of her assists during the 5-1 spurt.
After Ernst opened the second-half scoring to pull the Quakers to within 9-6, the Yellow Jackets scored three of the next four goals and opened a 12-7 margin after Cassidy scored unassisted with 19:33 left in regulation.
The Quakers kept Randolph-Macon off the scoreboard for the rest of the game, but could not finish the rally. Hannah Merrell scored on a free-position shot with 4:22 remaining and Ellie Merritt followed 54 seconds later to make it a 12-10 game. The teams exchanged possessions over the final three minutes, but only Cassidy managed a shot on goal, which Guilford's Alyzza-May Callahan stopped with 3:26 to play.
Elyse Cooper also scored three goals for Randolph-Macon, which had six different goal scorers. Morgan Hutchinson scored twice and added an assist. Goaltender Alex Flammia made eight saves and caused two turnovers.
Ernst's three goals and one assist paced the Quakers. Jennifer Abelin, the Quakers' lone senior who was honored prior to the game, scored two goals and had an assist. Summer Frazier also had a pair of goals and picked up a game-high four draw controls. Callahan finished with five stops, three in the second half.
Guilford entertains league-rival Bridgewater College Sunday (4/5) at 4:00 p.m. in a game rescheduled from March 15.
