Wingate Pulls Away from Rollins to Even Record
Wingate, N.C.---The Wingate University Bulldogs scored the final 12 goals of the game to pick up a 19-4 victory over the Tars of Rollins (Fla.) College in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. The Bulldogs improve to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the DSC. Rollins falls to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Wingate senior attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) led the way with four goals. Senior midfielder Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) had two goals and three assists, while redshirt junior attack Angus Derbyshire (Thurmont, Md.) added two goals and two assists. Sophomore attack BJ Neller (Winter Park, Fla.) led the Rollins charge with three goals.
After a goal from freshman attack Cooper Gilman (Winter Park, Fla.) gave Rollins a 1-0 lead at the 10:49 mark, the Bulldogs answered with seven consecutive goals. Redshirt freshman midfielder Travis Barrett (Andover, N.J.) tied the game at 1-1 at the 8:44 mark while Otterblad gave Wingate the lead for good with six minutes remaining. Derbyshire then scored back-to-back goals, followed by a tally from freshman midfielder Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) to make the score 5-1 Wingate after the first period.
A goal from Williams put Wingate on top 7-1 with 5:19 remaining in the second. Neller answered for the Tars, scoring three consecutive goals in a stretch covering 2:11 to make it 7-4 with two minutes remaining in the half. Wingate freshman attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) answered with his first goal of the year 13 seconds before halftime to put the home-standing Bulldogs on top 8-4.
The Bulldogs outscored the Tars 5-0 in the third, getting three from Williams along with a goal each from senior midfielder Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) and sophomore attack Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.). Wingate took a 13-4 lead into the fourth period.
Wingate added six more goals in the fourth frame for the 19-4 final. The Bulldogs outshot RC Tars 49-18, while holding a 31-12 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs collected 48 ground balls, compared to the 42 for Rollins. Freshman goalie Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) racked up six saves for the Bulldogs. Sophomore net minder Zach Cole (Rumford, R.I.) had 17 saves for the Tars.
Wingate returns to action Thursday, traveling to Catawba College for a 7:00 p.m. start. The Tars are back in action Wednesday, hosting Saint Leo (Fla.) University at 5:00 p.m.

WINTAGE, N.C. (April 5, 2009) - Sophomore sharpshooter BJ Neller netted a hat trick as the Tars took on Wingate University in a Deep South Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. In spite of the Tars' best efforts, Wingate took the win with a final score of 19-4, dropping Rollins to an overall mark of 2-7, 0-4 in DSC play, while the Bulldogs advance to 7-7, 2-2 in conference action.
Freshman Cooper Gilman joined Neller on the scoreboard with the first goal of the contest, while Clay Palmer registered two assists and Ian Tarrant tallied an assist of his own to help the Rollins offense. Facing off for the Tars was freshman midfielder Chuck Magid, winning 13-of-27 on the afternoon. Defensively, Andrew Vossler led both teams with nine ground balls, while goalies Zach Cole and Doug O'Brien made 10 and two saves, respectively.
