Medaille Derailed by St. John Fisher in Opener
The Medaille College men's lacrosse team headed to St. John Fisher College to open the 2009 season. The Cardinals would prove to be an unkind host as they dumped the Mavs, 24-5.
The opening quarter would be dominated by St. John Fisher as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, outshooting the Mavs 22-0 in the opening stanza. The Mavs would tally the first two goals of the second quarter as sophomore midfielder Jim Luthart (Amherst, NY/Amherst) would find the back of the net on an unassisted tally.
Luthart would notch another marker late in the fourth quarter, finishing with a team-high two goals. The second Maverick goal would come with a man advantage as sophomore transfer Sean Murray (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would trim the lead to 8-2 on a nice feed from senior Jordan Ellis (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). The Mavs would then be held in check as the Cardinals poured on the offense, scoring 16 straight goals before the Mavs netted the final three scores of the game.
The game's final goal was tallied by senior captain David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), who continues his climb to the top of the all time scoring list. He now has 59 goals and 55 assists for 114 points, seven points shy of the all-time mark of 121.
The Mavs are 0-1 on the young season and they will look to rebound as they head to Orlando, FL to take on Florida Southern College on Monday (3/16) at 7:00 p.m.
