Medaille Tops Penn State-Abington for First Win of '09

The Medaille College men's lacrosse team played their first home game of the season this afternoon at the Nichols School, as they hosted Penn State-Abington.

The Mavs got out to a sluggish start, as the visiting team netted three of the first four goals of the game and held a 3-1 advantage with 14:02 remaining in the second quarter. The Mavs would go on a tear from that point on, netting twelve of the games final 14 goals, en route to a 13-5 victory.

Seven Mavs found the back of the net in this game, with senior David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) leading the way. He finished with 2 goals and 3 assists for five points. Two Medaille players posted hat tricks as Joe Glieco (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) finished with 3 goals and 2 assists and freshman Matt Dunkle (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) poured in three goals of his own.

The biggest story may have been the play of senior goalkeeper Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), who finished with 16 saves and held the Lions scoreless for the final 21:39. Penn State-Abington only managed one goal in the second half of play. A strong performance was given by freshman, defensive midfielder Caleb Higgins (Clarence, NY/Clarence), who scooped up a game-high 8 ground balls and chipped in with a goal and an assist on the offensive half of the field as well.

The win is the first on the year for the Mavs and the first for new head coach Chaz Bulera, who has done a terrific job with the Mavs thus far. The Mavericks 1-5 will host Alfred University on Wednesday (4/1) at 4:00 p.m. at the Nichols School.
