Saxons Surge Past Medaille, 16-12

The Medaille College men's lacrosse team played host to a surging Alfred University (6-2) team this afternoon at the Nichols School. The Mavs were coming off their first win of the season and were looking to upset the Saxons.

The visitors jumped out to a commanding 8-2 lead after the first quarter but would have to hang on for a 16-12 victory over the Mavs. The story of the game was the play of Medaille senior midfielder David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), who had a historical game. He netted a record 8 goals and claimed the lone offensive record that had been eluding him, the all-time goals mark.

Bennett now has 75 for his career, one better than Bill Barnack ('06), who finished with 74. After the rocky start, the Mavs gained momentum heading into halftime as they closed the gap to 9-7.

The Saxons would outscore Medaille 4-1 in the third quarter, making thoughts of a comeback difficult. The Mavs would outscore Alfred 4-3 in the final quarter, but it was not enough.

For the second straight game the Mavs received a strong performance from sophomore attackman Joe Glieco (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) ,who finished with 2 goals and 2 assists while sophomore Jim Luthart (Amherst, NY/Amherst) proved to be a great set up man, dishing out 3 pretty assists. In the nets for Medaille, senior keeper Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) made several point blank saves, finishing the day with 12.

The Mavs fall to 1-6 on the year, but have been steadily improving their game. Next up for Medaille is a trip to Oberlin College on Saturday (4/4) for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff against the Yeomen.
