Marist Falls to Colgate in NCAA Play-in Rematch

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight decision on Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field to the Colgate Raiders, 15-9. The game was a rematch of the 2008 NCAA Tournament play-in game as each team won its respective conference, Marist, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Colgate, the Patriot League.

Senior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) led the Marist offense in points for the seventh game this season; she scored five goals on the afternoon. She and fellow senior Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) extended their point scoring streaks. Noftsker has tallied a point in 15 straight, while Garland has scored a point in her last 14 outings.

Additionally, Garland moved into third place all-time on the Marist career goals list. She passed Allison Occhione, who scored 117 goals in her career. Garland now stands alone in third place with 119 career markers.

The Raiders sprung into action as they opened the game on a 5-0 run. With the score 8-2, Marist went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to three at 8-5. During the stretch, senior Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) scored one goal off a Noftsker assist, while Garland scored the final two goals during the run.

In the second half, Marist would attempt to make a comeback. Trailing 14-5, junior Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) notched the first of four consecutive Marist goals that would cut the Colgate lead to 14-8. But it would be too little to late for the Red Foxes. Ciccarello also had five draw controls and three ground balls.

Colgate was led by seven goals from Brie Moran, with three additional tallies from Courtney Miller.

Marist (7-4) will return to action on Tuesday, April 14 in Lewisburg, Pa. as the Red Foxes face the Bucknell Bison. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) tallied her second highest goal and point totals in a single game at Colgate to pace the Raiders to a 15-9 victory over Marist, in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

Moran posted seven goals and one assist, while Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) chipped in a goal and a career-high five assists as Colgate prevailed for the ninth time in the last 10 games. Moran, who recorded an NCAA-best 10 goals and 12 points in the Raiders' 19-9 victory at Holy Cross on March 14, is now within four goals of becoming the second Colgate player to reach the 100-goal milestone this season. Moran has a team-best 43 goals on the year.

The Raiders, who improved to 11-3 overall, flexed their muscles in the opening moments of the contest. Colgate raced out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 6:37. Maddie Kearns (Chevy Chase, Md.) gave the Raiders the lead for good just 33 seconds after the opening draw. After Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) upped the Colgate cushion to two goals 1:20 later, Moran posted three consecutive goals, two coming within 13 seconds of each other to give the Raiders an early five goal advantage.

After the Red Foxes got on the scoreboard, Lawler and Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) increased the lead to 7-1 with back-to-back goals. For Didio, the goal moved her into 10th on the all-time goal list at Colgate (108) and pulled her within one point of reaching the top 10 career point list.

Marist, now 7-4, eventually pulled within 8-5, but Moran returned Colgate's advantage back to four with her fifth goal of the opening half, 3:19 before intermission. The Raiders raced into the half with a 9-5 lead.
