No. 17 Cortland Handles Brockport in SUNYAC Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) matched her career high with six goals and collected an assist to lead the nationally 17th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 15-7 victory versus Brockport in SUNYAC action Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved their record to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference with their fourth straight win. The Golden Eagles stayed winless on the season, 0-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga) was Cortland's only other player with multiple goals, scoring three times and registering two assists. Junior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) added a goal and an assist and five other players scored one goal. Cortland's two freshman goalies split time in the cage with Amanda Caloia (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) making two saves in the opening half and Brianna Straut (Nanuet) stopping three shots in the second half.

Freshman Carly Motondo (Syracuse/West Genesee) paced the Golden Eagles offense with three goals and two assists. Junior Melissa Hill (Rochester/Brighton) scored twice and chipped in with an assist and graduate student Julia Decker (Penn Yan) and freshman Karen Bianchi (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored a goal. Sophomore goalie Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale/Sayville) made 12 saves.

Hill gave the Golden Eagles their only lead of the game at 28 minutes, 19 seconds before Cortland went on a six-goal streak, three from Torre, to grab a 6-1 lead with 8:54 remaining in the first half. Bianchi scored at 7:10 and Torre netted her fourth of the game at 2:47 to complete the first-half scoring with Cortland leading 7-2.

Cortland then opened the second half with six of the first seven goals to take a commanding 13-3 lead with 14:55 on the clock. Abbott scored twice and assisted two other during the run and senior Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern) scored her first goal of the season. Brockport answered by scoring four of the last six goals for the final of 15-7 as Motondo collected all three of her scores and one of her assists during the stretch.

Cortland outshot Brockport, 31-19, and held a 28-22 advantage in ground balls.
