First-Half Burst Carries McDaniel Past Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting McDaniel College controlled 24 of the game's 33 draws en route to a 20-11 Centennial Conference women's lacrosse victory over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Green Terror improved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 5-6 and 0-5.
Washington jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the game before the Green Terror ran off eight unanswered goals to open up a 9-3 advantage on a goal by Jennifer Stone with 8:14 left in the first half. The Shorewomen scored the final two goals of the half to pull within 9-5 before the intermission on a goal by senior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) off an assist from senior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) with 1:36 on the clock.
The Shorewomen twice cut the lead to three goals early in the second half, but three straight goals by the Green Terror, capped off by free-position score by Stone with 20:15 remaining gave McDaniel a comfortable 13-7 lead. Washington scored the next two goals, but McDaniel answered with the next five goals to blow the game open and build an 18-9 advantage on a Brittany Baer goal with 7:40 remaining.
Lindsey McDonald scored five goals for McDaniel, while Stone finished with four goals and two assists and Baer tallied four goals and one assist. Chelsea Ferruzzi and Stephanie Sudbrook netted three goals each, while Steph Nichols had one goal and one assist for the Green Terror. Baer and Kristin Mele each had five draw controls for McDaniel.
Lambert paced the Shorewomen with five goals and an assist, while Jakub added two goals and one assist. Freshman attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh) found the back of the net three times for Washington, while sophomore midfielder Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) had a goal and an assist. Freshman defender Ally Yawman (Phoenix, MD/Hereford) added a game-high five caused turnovers.
McDaniel held a 39-24 advantage in shots in the game and disrupted Washington's transition game as the Shorewomen went just 11-of-29 on clears.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall.

The Green Terror (7-5, 3-3 CC), who also got four goals apiece from Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster), found itself in a 3-1 hole before scoring eight straight goals in a 9-minute, 25-second span.
Brittany Lambert led the Shorewomen (5-6, 0-5 CC) with five goals while Kalli Parrish contributed three markers.
Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead just 29 seconds into the game before three different Washington players tallied to give the hosts a two-goal advantage at the 20:01 mark and force a Green Terror timeout.
With 17:39 on the clock, McDonald started the game-clinching flurry and contributed twice more during the stretch for her second hat trick of the season. Stone and Baer each tallied twice in the run, while Ferruzzi added her second of the game.
Parrish started another three-goal burst to pull the Shorewomen within 9-6 just 14 seconds into the second half. McDonad and Lambert traded tallies nearly four minutes apart before Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's), Ferruzzi and Stone stretched the lead back out to six with 20:15 to play.
