Western New England Edges New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Senior tri-captain Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) registered four goals and three assists as the Western New England College women's lacrosse team held on to beat New England College, 15-14, on Wednesday (April 8) before 105 fans in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action.

Up 15-10 with 3:14 to play in the final half, Western New England College (5-5, 3-2 TCCC) thought they had the game all wrapped up, but the visiting Pilgrims had its own ideas as they scored four times in the last 1:56.

In the first half, the Golden Bears came out strong and led 7-2 with 12:52 remaining. At halftime WNEC held an 8-5 advantage.

New England College (4-5, 3-3 TCCC) burst out with two quick goals from senior tri-captain Casey McFarland (Webster, NH) (three goals) and senior attacker Brandi Vittum (Woodstock, VT) (three goals) to start the second frame.

But freshman midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) (three goals) and senior tri-captain Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) put in back-to-back scores to give Western New England College back its breathing room.

Sophomore attacker Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) also contributed three goals.

On defense, sophomore Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) led with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, and also had a draw control. Sophomore attacker Marisa Hebert (Saco, ME) had 14 of WNEC's 18 draw controls.

New England College senior tri-captain Emily Tanguay (Manchester, NH) led her team with six goals (three in each half).

WNEC sophomore goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) had nine saves while junior goalie Alexandra DiRico (Limerick, PA) finished with 17 for the Pilgrims.
