Saint Mary's Rallies, Then Edges Saint Francis in Overtime

Loretto, PA – Juliet Munroe scored her second goal of the game with 1:51 remaining in to lift the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team to a 20-19 win over the Saint Francis Red Flash on Wednesday afternoon. Saint Mary's rallied from a six-goal second half deficit to defeat Red Flash.

Saint Mary's (3-9) trailed 18-17 before Amy Daniels scored the game-tying goal with 45 seconds left to send the match into overtime. Both teams would score during the first three-minute overtime session. SFU's Brittany Kovacs scored with 1:42 left on the clock, then P.J. Hainley answered for the Gaels with 1:01 remaining in the first overtime.

With the match tied at 19-19 heading into the final three minutes, Munroe scored the only goal in the second overtime period, which turned out to be the game-winning tally.

Junior attacker Abbie Coleman led the Gaels with a season-high seven points, as she had season-highs with four goals and three assists. Senior midfielder P.J. Hainley scored a game-high five goals, improving her team-leading total to 33 on the year, while adding one assist. Dana Elfvin and Amy Daniels would set new career-bests with four goals each.

The Red Flash (1-8) got a five-goal performance from Meghan Crosby, while Chelsea Kent and Kate Simmons had four goals each. Kovacs, who scored Saint Francis' overtime goal, finished the match with three goals.

Goalkeeper Hilary Gardner came off the bench to start the second half and got the win for the Gaels in goal. Starting goalkeeper Whitney Campitiello made eight saves while allowing nine goals, all in the first half.

Munroe opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match, and after Simmons tied the score, Elfvin and Daniels scored to give SMC a 3-1 advantage. After trading goals, Coleman scored her second goal of the game to give SMC a 6-3 lead with 15:23 left in the first half.

SFU outscored the Gaels 6-1 over the next 15 minutes, and took a 9-7 lead with 53 ticks on the first half clock, after Crosby scored back-to-back goals. SMC got an unassisted goal by Hainley to close the half with the Gaels trailing 9-8 at the break.

After Hainley scored to open the second half, tying the score at 9-9, Saint Francis went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-9 lead with 17:01 remaining. A goal by Coleman at the 15:15 mark sparked an eight-goal streak by Saint Mary's, as the Gaels took a 17-15 lead with 5:36 remaining.

Saint Francis mounted a comeback of its own, scoring three straight times to regain the edge at 18-17 after a goal by Meg Lamarche with 1:39 left to play. Daniels scored her fourth goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, April 10 with an 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time road game against Duquesne.
