Defense Shines as Villanova Defeats Towson

Villanova, Pa. – The Villanova (8-3, 2-1 CAA) defense held their opponent to four goals for the fifth time this season as they defeated Towson (5-6, 3-1 CAA) 13-4 Wednesday. Senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) led the top ranked scoring defense in the net, recording 10 saves bringing his season total to 93.

The Tigers came on strong scoring two goals to be on top 2-1 less than two minutes into the second quarter, but they would never lead again. Villanova put together streaks of four and six goals to put the game out of reach for Towson.

Junior Mark Scioscia (East Hampton, N.Y.) led the way for Villanova with two goals and an assist in the contest. Scioscia now has five goals on the season. Senior Tim Langan Jr. (Madison, N.J.) also recorded two goals for Villanova for a total of 10 in 2009.

Villanova also received offensive spark from freshman CJ Small (San Diego, Calif.) and Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.J.). Each had a goal in the game giving Small nine and Cunningham two on the season.

Seniors Matthew Fritts (Dallas, Tex.) and Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.) kept their streak alive of scoring at least one point in each Villanova game. Fritts scored twice while MacDonald had a goal and an assist.

Towson was led by Randall Cooper who had a goal and an assist in the contest. Tiger goalkeeper Rob Wheeler notched five saves while allowing 10 goals.

The win is the second in two meetings for Villanova as they lost the previous 15 meetings with Towson. Villanova returns to action this Saturday April 11th when they travel to Drexel for a conference matchup. The contest is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Junior attackman Mark Scioscia (East Hampton H.S./East Hampton, N.Y.) scored two goals and added an assist as Villanova University (8-3, 2-1) used a 10-1 run in the second half to pull away for a 13-4 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Towson University (5-6, 3-1) at Villanova Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats, who entered the game with the nation's top scoring defense, held the Tigers to four goals. It is the fifth time this season Villanova has allowed just four goals in a game.

After a slow start, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter when senior midfielder Randall Cooper (Friends School/Phoenix, Md.) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Justin Schneider (St. Mary's H.S./Stevensville, Md.) for his seventh goal of the season.

Just 17 seconds into the second quarter, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 when senior midfielder Matthew Fritts (Highland Park H.S./Dallas, Texas) scored an extra-man goal by converting a pass from senior attackman Chris MacDonald (Westfield H.S./Westfield, N.J.). Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Pat Britton (Seneca Valley H.S./Germantown, Md.) regained the Tigers' one-goal edge with his seventh goal of the year, an unassisted marker past senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto (The Lawrenceville School/Wilton, Conn.).

However, the Wildcats took a 3-2 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first half after back-to-back goals from sophomore defenseman Chris Ficke (Delbarton H.S./Morris Plains, N.J.) and senior attackman Tim Driscoll (Montville H.S./Montville, N.J.).

Junior midfielder Will Harrington (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.) tied the game at 3-3 with an unassisted goal with 3:10 remaining before the Wildcats started their game-clinching run with two goals in the final two minutes of the first half.
