Cazenovia Falls to Alfred in Non-Conference Action

SYRACUSE, N.Y. The Wildcats were outscored 9-1 in the second and third quarters, as the Cazenovia College men's lacrosse team lost to the Alfred University Saxons, 12-7, Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Onondaga Community College. Cazenovia dropped to 5-5 overall, while the Saxons improved to 8-2 on the season.

Junior Gareth Fabian (Randolph, VT) led Cazenovia on offense with three goals. Fellow junior Pat Sauers (Saranac Lake, NY) scored two tallies, while freshmen TJ Shaw (Tully, NY) and Dylan West (Smithtown, NY) each added one. Sophomore Kyle Boland (Clifton Park, NY) dished out a game-high three assists in the loss.

The Wildcats and Saxons were knotted up 1-1 after the first quarter and nearly mirrored each other in all statistical categories. Alfred took control in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 into the break. Aside from a goal by Shaw at the 7:57 mark of the third, the Saxons stayed on top of the Wildcats in that period as well, outscoring Cazenovia 5-1.

Down 10-2 heading into the fourth, the Wildcats rallied after Alfred opened up the quarter with a goal and scored four straight to make it 11-6 with 5:36 remaining. But the Saxons stood strong as each team added one more score before the final horn.

Cazenovia won just 2-of-8 face-offs in the first half, but came back to take 9-of-14 in the second. The Wildcats also converted 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities and were successful on 23-of-25 clears. Junior Pete Davis (Penn Yan, NY) led the Wildcats with eight ground balls on the night.

Freshman Alex Iannicello (Camillus, NY) played just under 47 minutes in goal for the Wildcats, allowing 10 goals and collecting eight saves in the loss.

The Wildcats are off until April 18 when they face North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Keuka College at 2:00 p.m.
