Washington & Jefferson Outguns Oberlin
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and freshman Brittany Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery) both scored five goals to help the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team defeat Oberlin College, 19-11, on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The 19 goals are the most by the Presidents in the 20 games since the program was started at the college last season. W&J improved to 3-6 with the victory and equaled its win total from the 2008 inaugural season.
Oake netted two goals during an early run which gave W&J a 5-1 lead at the 24:19 mark of the first half. The Yeowomen (0-8) closed to within 6-3, but the Presidents ended the half with four of the final five goals to claim a 10-4 edge after 30 minutes. Schrock fired in two goals during the final three minutes.
Washington & Jefferson put the game away with the first five goals of the second half. Oake netted two of the goals, while Schrock and freshmen Joanne Chojecki (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Senior) and Cayla Grodotzke (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) all contributed one goal. Oberlin was unable to bring its deficit to less than eight goals the rest of the way.
W&J doubled up Oberlin in shots, 42-21, and forced 28 OC turnovers. W&J also held a 22-19 ground ball advantage, while both squads collected 16 draw controls.
Senior Laura Peery (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore Shannon Wagner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Grodotzke all added two goals for W&J. Grodotzke also notched five caused turnovers.
Chojecki, senior Valerie Orzechowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and freshman Liz Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School) all posted one goal. Freshman Kerri Nunnamaker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) led the Presidents with two assists.
Sophomore goalie Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) turned back five shots to accumulate her sixth career win.
Taylor Fey racked up five goals for the Yeowomen, while Dana Rich and Ariel Schuster both scored three times. Emily Perry made 19 saves in the loss.
Washington & Jefferson begins a three-game road swing on Saturday when traveling to Winchester, Va., for a 2:00 pm game at Shenandoah.
