No. 6 Hamilton Survives No. 16 William Smith in Overtime
CLINTON, N.Y. -- Anne Graveley '11 scored with six seconds left in overtime to lift nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton College to an 8-7 win against visiting William Smith College in a Liberty League women's lacrosse game played at Campus Road Athletic Field on April 10.
Kaillie Briscoe '09 started the game-winning play behind the William Smith goal. Briscoe carried the ball around the left side of the goal, and drew goalie Becky Josefiak '09 out of the crease. Briscoe found Graveley a few feet in front of the goal and Graveley fired an overhead shot into the empty net for her 19th goal.
Briscoe finished the day with three goals and two assists. She broke the program's career record for goals with 19:02 left in the second half when she scored her 188th. Sarah Gloo '01 finished her four-year career with 187 and Briscoe now has 189. She leads the league with 22 assists and 46 points.
Kate Marek '09 chipped in two goals and Liz Rave '10 added one for Hamilton (9-1 overall, 5-0 Liberty). Catie Gibbons '09 led the defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Sarah Bray '11 won four draw controls. Kate Fowler '10 made five saves.
Sarah Goodkind '10 paced No. 16 William Smith's offense with two goals and one assist. Molly Fitzgerald '10 and Michaela Parnell '09 contributed two goals apiece. Parnell and Josefiak caused three turnovers each. Torie Allen '09 scooped up a game-high eight ground balls and Lucy Johnson '12 captured three draw controls. Josefiak was fantastic in goal as she made 17 saves, including 10 in the second half alone.
The Continentals held leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 5-3 in the first half. The Herons (7-2, 4-1) roared back with three straight goals to open the second half. Goodkind's 22nd this year gave William Smith a 6-5 advantage with 19:31 left in regulation. Briscoe tied the score 29 seconds later, and put Hamilton back on top with her 24th goal with 8:21 remaining. Parnell tied the score at 7-7 with her 15th goal this season with 1:14 left.
The Continentals have won seven straight games overall, 27 in a row at home and 25 straight against league opponents. The Herons still lead the all-time series, 31-8.

Heron senior Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) netted the game-tying goal with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in regulation to force extra time, but Continental Anne Graveley would score the game-winner with six seconds to play to give Hamilton the victory. The Herons slip to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Continentals improve to 9-1 on the season, 5-0 in the Liberty League.
Junior Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.) led William Smith with two goals and an assist, while Parnell and junior Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) added two goals apiece.
The Continentals were led by Kallie Briscoe's three goals and two helpers, while Kate Marek and Graveley each tallied twice.
Hamilton jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Marek and Briscoe. William Smith answered a short time later with its first score of the day. Sophomore Kara Grogan (Gunnery School/West Simsbury, Conn.) found classmate Cassie Findlay (Episcopal/Riverside, Conn.) for the tally with 15:24 to play in the half.
Fitzgerald evened the contest at 2-all off an assist from Goodkind less than three minutes later, but Hamilton's Marek and Liz Rave would net back-to-back scores to reclaim the hosts' two-goal lead. With 56 seconds to play before the break, Fitzgerald scored her 33rd goal of the season, bringing the Herons within one, 4-3, but Graveley found the back of the net with 2 seconds remaining to give the Continentals a 5-3 advantage at the break.
