Skidmore Wins Three-Overtime Shootout vs. Rochester
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) scored 22 seconds into the sixth overtime to give the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team a 16-15 Liberty League win over the University of Rochester, Friday at Wachenheim Field.
[Note: Given the total time, 75:22, this game was three overtimes. The breaks to switch ends during the OT periods lead many, maybe most, to count the number of OTs incorrectly. The situation is very confusing. See this news post for more information.]
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-2 in Liberty play and 6-4 overall, while the Yellowjackets fall to 1-2 and 5-5.
Skidmore's Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) won a hard-earned draw control to open the sixth overtime. She got the ball to Segalas who went on a 30-yard run through the UR defense, before unleashing the winning shot past Yellowjacket goalie Leslie Dube (Skaneateles, N.Y.).
The Thoroughbreds staged a wild comeback to force overtime. Down 14-11, Madden converted a free-position goal with 3:22 to play in regulation to cut the lead to two, 14-12. Madden scored again with 1:52 to play to make it 14-13. Skidmore forced a turnover in the Rochester end with 34 seconds to play in regulation. After a timeout, Abbie Klaus (Bethesda, Md.) tied the game with :18 seconds left to force the overtime.
The teams traded goals in the first two overtimes. Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) gave Skidmore its first lead of the game, 15-14 with 2:15 to play in the first overtime. Abby Woodward (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) tied it for Rochester at 1:42 of the second overtime to send the game into the "sudden victory" periods. The Yellowjackets had two shots on goal in the final minute of the second overtime, but Thoroughbred goalie Courtney DeStefano (Rehoboth, Mass.) stopped both shots.
Neither team had a shot on goal in the third overtime and Rochester failed to convert on two free position chances in the fourth overtime, with both shots going wide. The Yellowjackets had the only shot of the fifth overtime, but it went wide.
Madden finished with five goals, two assists, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Segalas had three goals and Lindsay Stavola had four goals and an assist. Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y./Lansingburgh) had a big game on defense for Skidmore with five caused turnovers, four draw controls, and three ground balls.
Mary Kate Hannan (Syracuse, N.Y.) led Rochester with six goals and two assists, including five goals in the first half. Woodward finished with four goals. Danielle Mondro (Concord, N.H.) had a goal, an assist and eight draw controls.
Skidmore out shot Rochester 41-34 for the game, but the Yellowjackets held a 8-3 advantage in the overtime periods. DeStefano finished with eight saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Dube had 15 saves, including 10 in the second half.
Skidmore is home again April 15 at 7:00 p.m. against Williams College. Rochester is at Union on Saturday.
