Catanese Lifts Mount St. Mary's Past Wagner

Staten Island, NY – Freshman midfielder Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) scored two goals and assisted on another but the Wagner College women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early 4-0 deficit in losing to Mount St. Mary's 19-8 on a rain-splashed afternoon.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 4-9 and 3-3 in the Northeast Conference while the Mountaineers improve to 6-9 overall, and a sparkling 6-1 in league play.

Kately Catanese scored three of her game-high five goals in the opening 8:47 to help stake the Mount to that 4-0 lead. Wagner got on the board via a Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/ Cheshire) goal off an assist from senior attack Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA/ Plymouth Whitemarsh). Blundin then found the net off a Clark assist to make it a 4-2 game with 17:18 left in the opening half. For Blundin, it was career goal number 100 in her illustrious career.

Two Mount St. Mary's tallied were followed by an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Lauren Petrik (Syracuse, NY/ Baldwinsville) that drew the Seahawks to within 6-3 with 13:35 to go in the opening half. This was as close as Wagner would get the rest of the game, however, as the Mountaineers responded with three consecutive goals to build a 9-3 lead and eventual 11-5 bulge at halftime.

Mount St. Mary's, which received four goals and three assists from Brianna Gauthier, remained in command throughout the second half en route to posting the 19-8 victory. The Mount out-shot Wagner 36-20, held a 19-9 edge in ground balls and led in draw controls, 16-12. The Mountaineers were 2-of-3 on free position attempts while Wagner was 0-of-1.

In goal, Brigid McTavish came up with two saves in the first half before yielding to Erin Kelly, who came on to record two saves while playing the entire second half. For the Seahawks, Amy Jones (Jarretsville, MD) got the starting nod in goal on Senior Day and came up with six saves before being replaced by junior Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) who notched four saves over the final 42:20 of the contest.

Blundin wound up with one goal and one assist for Wagner which also received goals from senior attack Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA) and freshman midfielder Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview).

Wagner is next in action on Tuesday, April 14 when the Seahawks travel to New Haven, CT to face Ivy League foe Yale in a 4:00 pm start.

STICK CHECKS – The Seahawks were without the services of their second-leading scorer Janine Bright (Commack, NY/ Commack), a junior attack, who was out with an injury. Bright has 16 goals and 13 assists on the season. Today marked the final home game of the season for Wagner and was also Senior Day. Five Seahawks – Kelly Blundin, Cara Gonzalez, Lindsay Hashmall, Amy Jones and Jessica Richmond – were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y.) scored five goals including a natural hat trick in the first half to lift Mount St. Mary's past Wagner 19-8 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday. With the win coupled with Quinnipiac's 12-11 double-overtime win against Robert Morris, the Mount clinched its seventh-straight NEC Tournament appearance.

Catanese helped get the Mountaineers (6-9, 6-1 NEC) off to a fast track by scoring three of the first four goals of the afternoon. The senior scored three-straight goals in a span of three minutes and five seconds in the first 10 minutes of the game. She added a goal midway through the first half and a tally in the second half to finish the match with five markers.
