Strong Second Half Carries McDaniel over Muhlenberg
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) tallied three goals and an assist to lead McDaniel to a 12-11 victory over Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (8-4, 2-3 CC), who had seven different players score, reeled off a 7-1 run to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 10-7 lead. Nick Fletcher paced the Mules (3-7, 3-4 CC) with four goals.
After Brent Siebold capped a three-goal flurry with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter, Warner finished a solo run with 3:17 showing until halftime to trim the deficit to 6-4 at the break.
Evan Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck), DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) and Nicholas DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) accounted for a 3-0 third quarter, scoring just the three goals just 2:21 apart for a 7-6 lead.
Clint Watlins evened the game at 7-all with 58 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter before Warner started another three-goal run.
Warner scored unassisted at the 12:08 mark before Rickels finished a solo run 22 seconds later. Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilminton Friends School) capped the run off a Warner feed at the 7:30 mark.
Siebold and Fletcher each scored to close the Muhlenberg deficit to 10-9 with 4:06 to play. A Warner tally and Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) man-up marker stretched the lead back to three with 1:55 to play. Fletcher made it a two-goal game 20 seconds later before Siebold completed his hat trick with 0.5 seconds showing on the clock.
Fletcher opened the scoring 1:11 into the game before an own goal evened the score and Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) gave McDaniel a one-goal lead at the 11:13 mark. A Fletcher man-up tally evened the game with 1:13 to play in the opening period before Tom Brant scored off a Dan Dugan feed directly off the ensuing faceoff.
DiBernardo evened the game at three before the three-goal burst opened the Mules' largest advantage of the game.
Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) won 9 of 17 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls. McDaniel returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
