Cable, Ford Lead Stony Brook Past Binghamton

Stony Brook, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2009) – Sophomore Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) tied a career-high with four goals and freshman Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) tallied career-highs with three scores and three assists to lead the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team to a 16-10 victory over Binghamton, at a rainy LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Seawolves (4-10, 1-3 America East), who also got two goals and three assists from senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.), snap a six-game losing streak, their longest in school history. Four players each tallied two goals for the Bearcats (3-10, 0-4).

After Binghamton's Meg Brown scored at 22:07 to tie the game at two, Leggio's 32nd tally of the season started a seven unanswered goal spurt for Stony Brook, which was capped by a pair of goals from Cable.

The Seawolves' 9-2 lead was their biggest advantage of the game. The Bearcats, who were held scoreless for almost 19 minutes, used an unassisted goal from Ali Castiglie and a score from Lis Zuern as time expired in the first 30 minutes to close within 9-4 entering the locker rooms.

Beth Moore started off the second-half scoring, netting a free-position goal at 27:43 to close the Stony Brook gap to 9-5 but sophomore Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who tallied four points for the third time this season, scored unassisted to stretch the lead back to five, 10-5.

After the Bearcats and Seawolves traded a pair of goals, a score from Moore and two tallies from Emily Thon got Binghamton within two, 12-10, with just 9:18 remaining, forcing Stony Brook to call a timeout.

But the Seawolves regrouped, forcing a turnover and on the ensuing possession, senior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the first of two second-half goals as Stony Brook ended any threat to Binghamton's comeback with four straight goals to end the game. Cable, Celano and Ford scored Stony Brook final three goals with Ford and Celano assisting on each other's scores.

Junior Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made nine saves including six in the first half for Stony Brook, which tied a season-high with four free-position goals on just five shots.

Stony Brook returns to action when it takes on Albany on April 18 at 1:00 pm. Prior to Saturday's game against the Great Danes, Celano, Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia), Leggio, Melissa Law (Woodstock, N.Y.), Allyson Konczynin (Setauket, N.Y.), Jenna Spenard (Cicero, N.Y.) and Kim Wodiska (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) will be honored in a senior class ceremony.
