Karwoski Tallies Five in Yale Win Over Fairfield

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Michael Karwoski had five goals while Brendan Gibson and Matt Gibson each chipped in three as the Yale men's lacrosse team defeated Fairfield 18-11 at Reese Stadium. The Elis evened their record at 5-5 by putting together a pair of long scoring runs to win a second straight non-league game.

Brendan Gibson opened the scoring at 13:16 and started a string of four straight by four different Bulldogs. The Stags (6-4) answered with three straight to end the first quarter, including goals by Chris Trombino (2) and Ryan Mulford (2).

The second frame opened with tallies by Gregory Mahony (2-1-3), Nick Tsouris and Karwoski over a two-minute span to give the Blue a 7-3 advantage. Fairfield notched the next two to cut the lead to 7-5, and had the margin at two one more time at 10-8 with eight minutes left in the third. That's when the home team went on an 8-0 run, including three by Karwoski, to put the game away.

The other Yale goals came from Matt Miller (2), Matt Fuchs and Michael Barry.

Karwoski, who helped the Elis reach a season-high offensive output tonight, tied his career-high with five goals. The senior midfielder now leads the squad with 22 goals and 29 points.

Sophomore Johnathan Falcone earned the win in net with 13 saves, including five in the second quarter, while allowing eight goals. Falcone and the Yale defense blanked the visitors for 15-minute span in the second half that enabled the Blue to put it away. Freshman Andrew Brown, who had three shots get behind him, took over for the last three and a half minutes.

Charlie Cipriano got the start in the Fairfield goal and gave up six on the first six on target over 17:17 before Tommy Kralovenec (9 saves) came in relief.

We played really hard, we played tough. They're a really good team, but we finished our shots. Guys played well all over the field, we played really fast," said Yale head coach Andy Shay. "They've (Yale) tried to get better every game, and they've done it. They've gotten better every game, I'm very proud of them."

Both teams tallied three times on seven extra-man chances while Fairfield had a slight edge in shots (43-40) and ground balls (34-32). The Elis had one more faceoff win than the Stags with Kevin Discepolo (14-for-29) and Max Rodman (3-for-4) combining efforts in the circle.

"We really wanted to finish the fourth quarter, and that was our focus since we've had a tough time doing it," said Shay.

The Bulldogs are home again on Wednesday night at 7 to face Dartmouth at Reese Stadium.
