Dominican College Outgunned by Wilmington

Orangeburg, NY (4/14/09) -- The visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University edged the Dominican College Lady Chargers, 13-11 this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's lacrosse action.

The 'Cats got on the board in the first five minutes of the game as sophomore Danielle Niccoli (Sparrow Point, MD) netted a goal off the assist by freshman Mary Sing (Lewes, DE). The Lady Chargers answered back with two straight goals from Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) and Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ) to take a 2-1 advantage.

WU went on a 2-0 run themselves as Sing added a goal, along with attacker Samantha Jewell (Aberdeen, MD) to regain a one goal lead. DC once again came back with two goals from freshman Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) to go up a goal. The 'Cats ended the first half with goals from Kelly Wojciechowski (Baltimore, MD) and Sing as they held a 5-4 lead at the break.

Dominican quickly tied the game at the beginning of the second half as Karlsen netted an unassisted goal. However Wilmington went on to outscore DC 8-6 in the final 28 minutes of regulation en route to the 13-11 victory. The Lady Chargers trailed by a goal with 7:33 left in the game, but a 2-0 spurt from the 'Cats solidified a 13-11 victory.

Sing led the Wildcats with nine points (four goals, five assists), while Niccoli added four points (three goals, one assist). Jewell and Jessica Graybeal (Havre de Grace, MD) each had three points, while Wojciechowski finished with two goals. Sophomore goalie Amber Harmon (Bear, DE) had 21 saves in the victory.

The Lady Chargers were led by Williams as she tallied five points (four goals, one assist). Karlsen finished with three goals for three points, while sophomore Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, NY) netted two goals. Alycia Shillingford (Cape May, NJ) and Matos each finished with a goal. Junior goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) had 22 saves.

With the victory Wilmington improves to 7-7 overall and 4-5 in the CACC, while Dominican falls to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the CACC.
