No. 15 Cortland Grounds the Hawks to Go 5-0 in SUNYAC
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Nine different players scored goals and 12 different players collected at least one point as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-3 win at New Paltz Tuesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved their overall record to 8-5 and league mark to 5-0 with the victory, and the Hawks fell to 2-8 and 0-5.
Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) paced the Cortland offense with five goals and two assists and now has 51 goals on the season, the 29th a Red Dragons has scored 50 or more goals in a campaign. Junior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored four goals and three players scored two goals each: sophomores Alyssa Hoover (Baldwin), Brianna Shost (Mahopac) and freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central).
Senior Meghan Gallagher (Long Beach) chipped in with a goal and two assists and junior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshmen Erin Kollar (East Islip) and Olivia Lynch (North Rockland) netted one goal apiece. Freshman Amanda Caloia (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) played the first half and did not register a save before giving way to freshman Brianna Straut (Nanuet), who stopped one shot in the second half.
Brittany Bennett, Sam Delgaudia and Bridget Grover each scored a goal for New Paltz. Goalie Lorraine Vultaggion turned aside 13 shots.
Cortland scored the first 11 goals of the game in the opening 21 minutes, 11 seconds of the first half as Torre scored three times and Abbott, Fritz and Shost each tallied twice. New Paltz scored back-to-back goals at 7:32 and 4:26 to make it an 11-2 game before Torre finished off the first-half scoring with her fourth of the game and 50th of the season.
Fritz and Mahoney upped Cortland's lead to 14-2 early in the second half. Delgaudia scored the Hawks' final goal at the 15:56 mark and the Red Dragons closed out the game with five consecutive scores, including two from Hoover.
Cortland outshot New Paltz, 44-7, and held a 43-26 advantage in ground balls.
