Shenandoah Downs Ferrum in USA South Quarterfinal

WINCHESTER, Va. - Host Shenandoah University earned its first trip to the USA South Conference women's lacrosse tournament semifinals in five years with an 18-5 quarterfinal round victory over Ferrum College Tuesday night on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.

The Hornets (3-11) now advance to the tournament semifinals at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C. to face top-seeded Christopher Newport. This match, which is part of the 4th Annual USA South Conference Spring Sports Festival, begins at 1:00 Friday afternoon.

Just 10 days after beating Ferrum (3-11) in its conference regular season finale, SU turned the trick again with a dominating performance Tuesday night on a rainy and cold Sprint Field turf.

Sophomore Jennie Ott got things started for the Hornets with her unassisted goal 90 seconds in, and after FC tied it up seven minutes later, SU started a five-goal run that effectively clinched the contest for the hosts. Four different women scored goals during this span with freshman Kierra Nicholson adding two.

The Panthers scored two of the next three goals of the game before Shenandoah reeled off another five-goal run that pushed the advantage into double-digits for the first time.

Ferrum briefly returned the clock to stop time with two goals in 56 seconds, but SU answered with a third 5-0 run to provide the final margin of victory.

Sophomore Sara Mucciaro led all scorers with six goals and one assist, Ott had three goals, three assists and a game-high 11 groundballs and Jessie Kuykendall added three goals.

The Hornets outshot FC 44-12, had a 55-22 advantage in groundballs and broke 25 of the Panthers 35 clearing attempts.
