Eastern Connecticut Wings Past Western Connecticut

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior attack Courtney Bedocs (Hamden) scored four second-half goals and junior attack Brooke Wayte (Bellport, NY) and freshman midfielder Nicole Shusdock (Norwalk) added three each after the break as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team rolled to a 20-8 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon.

A winner of four of its last five, Eastern (5-7, 3-0 little east) stretches its conference winning streak to 19 with its 13th consecutive victory over Western (6-6, 1-3 little east). A winner of four of its previous six entering the match, Western has already exceeded its overall win total from a year ago.

Leading 13-7, the Warriors scored seven of the game's final eight goals over the final 11 minutes of play to pull away. Five different players contributed goals in that late run for the two-time conference regular-season and playoff champions, with Bedocs potting the final three of the match over the final five minutes.

Ten different Eastern players contributed to the attack. Bedocs and junior attack Katie Beers (Trumbull) each had four goals, with Beers also adding two assists for a career-high six points. Beers converted four of her six shots in the gam e. Shusdock and Wayte added three goals each and junior midfielder Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, MA) contributed two goals and two assists.

Four of Western's goals came on eight free-position attempts. Only freshman attack Jessica Bouwman (New Milford) had more than one goal. She finished with two. Junior attack Jessica Majeski (Norwalk) had a goal and two assists for Western.

Senior midfielder Jessica Richards (Somers) won 17 of 27 faceoffs for the Warriors, collecting a team-high six draw controls. MacDonald won four draws, picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Del Vecchio (Fairfield) won three draws. Junior midfielder Dana McLaughlin (West Hartford), freshman midfielder Megan Barrett (Setauket, NY) each had four of the team's 26 ground balls.

Junior midfielder Kara Kruczkiewicz (Brookfield) led the Colonials by picking up seven of their 16 ground balls, winning three draws and causing two turnovers. Eastern freshman goalie Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton) made nine saves, Western freshman Mercedes Koehler (Bethel) stopping seven.

Eastern visits Connecticut College Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
