Fairfield Downs LIU to Win Sixth Straight

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team won its sixth consecutive game, defeating Long Island University 20-9 on Lessing Field in the Stags final non-conference game of the regular season. The winners of 11 of their last 12 games, the Stags are 12-2 on the year, while the Blackbirds fall to 3-11 overall.

Rebecca White (Spring Lake, N.J.) started the scoring 2:06 into the game, netting a pass from Kim Fuchs (Garden City, N.Y.). LIU would answer 11 seconds later as Claire Ranney (Jarrettsville, Md.) won the ensuing draw and went straight to the cage for a 1-1 tie.

White gave the Stags a 2-1 lead five minutes into the half, kick starting a 4-0 run over 1:43 to put Fairfield in front 5-1. LIU would score three of the next five goals, making it 7-4 Stags with 17:39 to play in the half. Kristen Coleman (Potomac, Md.) scored unassisted with 16:59 remaining in the half, beginning a 9-0 half ending run, giving the Stags a 16-4 halftime advantage.

Fairfield scored the first four goals of the second half, the last two by Katie Phillips (Longmeadow, Mass.) at 22:51 and 21:12 to take a 20-4 lead. The Stags received goals from 10 different players in the contest, with White and Coleman leading the way with four scores apiece. Kylee Martin (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal with 13:42 to play in the first-half, her only tally of the game, and it would prove to be the game-winning tally.

Lauren Chatnik (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned the win in net for the Stags, making 10 saves in 45:57 of action, and allowing six goals. Kelley Brady (Olney, Md.) played the final 14:03 in the crease, making a career-high four saves, while allowing three goals.

LIU was led by the five-point effort of Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.), who tallied three goals. Jacqueline Simonian (Farmingdale, N.Y.) started in goal and played the first 30 minutes, making five saves, while allowing 16 goals. Amber Meek (Woodbridge, Va.) played the second-half in goal, making five saves and allowing four goals.

The Stags will be back in action on Friday, April 17, as they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Canisius College. Both teams enter the contest at 4-0 in conference action and the winner will clinch the top-seed at next weekends MAAC Championship.

Fairfield, Conn. - The Long Island University women's lacrosse could not overcome a late first half run by Fairfield and fell, 20-9, in non-conference action on Wednesday at Lessing Field. The Stags used a 9-0 run to close the opening period and opened the second half with four unanswered goals to pull away from the Blackbirds. Junior Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) led LIU with three goals and two assists.

LIU (3-11) tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by freshman Claire Ranney (Jarrettsville, Md.) in the early going. Fairfield responded with a 4-0 run to build a 5-1 lead before the Blackbirds responded with a goal by sophomore Annie Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) to stem the run. The teams then alternated goals, with Wienckowski accounting for two LIU goals to make it 7-4 at the 17:39 mark.

Fairfield (12-2) came back with the decisive run to close the period. Kristen Coleman opened the spurt and accounted for two scores, while Kate Reardon chipped in with a pair of her own, including the score to cap the run at the 5:21 mark. Reardon's goal pushed the lead to 16-4 at halftime.

The Stags opened the second period with a goal by Reardon and two more from Katie Phillips were part of a 4-0 run to push the game out of reach. The Blackbirds managed to outscore Fairfield, 5-0 over the final 17:31 to account for the final margin.
