Ursinus Hands Muhlenberg 14-11 Loss in Centennial Play
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – In its final home match of the 2009 season, the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team rallied from a 5-3 halftime deficit to hand Muhlenberg a 14-11 loss on a cold Wednesday afternoon.
The Bears (5-10, 4-4 Centennial) got three goals from sophomore attack Lindsay Urban (Doylestown, PA/CB East) and freshman midfielder Kim Peifer (Collegeville, PA/Methacton), while seniors Jenna Werley (Springfield, PA/Springfield) and Catie Cameron (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) each had two goals in the win.
Werley chipped in with three assists, as she was one of four seniors playing in their final home match this afternoon.
Trailing 5-3 at half, despite leading the game 3-0 after 5:51 of play, the Bears saw Muhlenberg (9-3, 5-3 Centennial) score its sixth straight goal with 28:10 left in the game as freshman midfielder Angela Napoletano scored for a 6-3 Mules lead.
The Bears came back with three straight goals to tie the score at 6-all with 25:18 left when freshman midfielder Alyssa Thren (Barto, PA/Upper Perkiomen) scored unassisted.
Ursinus would then score seven out of the next eight goals to take a 13-8 lead with 11:15 left as Urban scored on an assist from Werley. For Muhlenberg, junior midfielder Amanda McGovern had three goals.
For Ursinus, the Bears forced 21 Muhlenberg turnovers in the win. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Cannon (Garrison, NY/James I. O'Neil) had three caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Sarah Brant (Collegeville, PA/The Hill School) had five groundballs on the day. In goal, junior Alex McBride (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had eight saves.
Ursinus goes to Gettysburg on Saturday.
