Gophers Improve to 13-0 All-Time Against Cardinals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goucher improved to 13-0 all-time against Catholic by knocking off the Cardinals, 9-5, in a Landmark Conference game played today in the nation's capital.
The Gophers (8-4, 3-1 Landmark) took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Jake Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) just :32 into the contest. They went on to outshoot the Cardinals (7-6, 1-3 Landmark), 13-2, in the first quarter, but they were only able to add an unassisted goal by Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) as the period ended with Goucher ahead 2-0.
With Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) accounting for five of the goals, Goucher outscored Catholic, 6-2, over the middle two periods and entered the fourth quarter leading 8-2.
Both teams received solid performances out of their starting goalkeepers. For Goucher, senior Austin Main (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) turned away nine shots and became only the third goalkeeper in school history to surpass 600 career saves. Catholic's Sean McKenna was credited with 18 saves.
